L'8 settembre 1943, con l'occupazione nazista del nostro Paese, poco meno di un milione di militari italiani vennero disarmati e catturati dai tedeschi. Alcuni riuscirono a dileguarsi nel caos di quelle settimane, alcuni – una volta entrati nei campi di prigionia – aderirono alla Repubblica sociale italiana e tornarono in Italia. Ma la stragrande maggioranza, circa 600.000, preferì rimanere nei campi di prigionia piuttosto che aderire alla Rsi. Colpito dal rifiuto dei prigionieri, nell'estate del 1944 Hitler li trasformò in 'lavoratori volontari', ovvero coatti. Per le pessime condizioni di vita nei campi, circa 50.000 persero la vita. Gli Internati militari italiani (Imi), dunque, furono protagonisti del primo 'referendum antifascista', ma hanno sempre fatto fatica a trovare un riconoscimento nella memoria della guerra e della Resistenza e in questi ultimi anni sono diventati un oggetto di contesa politica. Il loro 'No' al fascismo di Salò è stato depotenziato di ogni valore morale e politico. Sono tornati a essere dei prigionieri e non dei 'resistenti senz'armi'. Un esempio di 'battaglia sulla memoria' nella quale la Resistenza rischia di essere di nuovo accantonata.
