The Italian Far Right from 1945 to the Russia–Ukraine Conflict provides a comprehensive account of the postwar parliamentary and extra parliamentary far right in Italy. This book explores the ideology, movements and activism of the extreme right and neo- fascists. The recent victory in the Italian parliamentary elections of the ‘post-fascist’ party Fratelli d’Italia and its leader Giorgia Meloni highlights the importance of such research. The book examines why some of these movements participated with CIA- backing in the ‘Strategy of Tension’ in the years of the Cold War where terrorist actions aimed to keep Italy in NATO and prevent the Communist Party from coming to power, while other extreme- right groups vehemently opposed this and what they considered the dangerous ‘Americanization’ of the country. It debunks the myth that there was a unified postwar fascist movement in Italy, but instead excavates the complex battles within the extreme right as well as with their opponents from the left, and the authorities. This study is necessary to clarify the history and ideological dynamics of a political area still too often shrouded in mystery and whose geopolitical role is still poorly understood and generally underestimated. The analysis is contextualized in the present day by looking at the different perspectives of the Italian far right on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The book will be of interest to researchers of political history, the Cold War and Italian history and politics.

Il 2 agosto 1980 Anna Di Vittorio perse il fratello Mauro. In quei giorni conobbe Gian Carlo Calidori, poi divenuto suo marito, che nella strage aveva perso invece un amico. Una quindicina d’anni fa, dopo un lungo percorso di corrispondenza e conoscenza con Mambro e Fioravanti, Anna e il marito scrissero la lettera di “perdono” che consentì alla Mambro di ottenere la libertà. Poi però il fronte innocentista iniziò a sostenere che a trasportare la bomba, rimanendone vittima, era stato Mauro Di Vittorio, vicino a Lotta Continua. All’ipotesi aderirono senza imbarazzi proprio Mambro e Fioravanti. La vicenda rientrò, anche per via giudiziaria, ma permette di fare il punto definitivo sulla storia processuale e sulle novità emerse dalle sentenze su Gilberto Cavallini e Paolo Bellini, entrambi condannati all’ergastolo. Lo sfondo di quest’ultimo processo riguardava, infatti, per la prima volta, mandanti e organizzatori della strage. E passi per Gelli e Ortolani, ma sono rispuntati nomi che sembravano appartenere a una stagione precedente, come l’ex capo dell’Ufficio affari riservati Federico Umberto D’Amato e il giornalista Mario Tedeschi, già senatore missino e direttore del “Borghese”. Oggi la lettura della strage di Bologna è cambiata: non più l’opera di un gruppo di ragazzetti esaltati (i Nar), bensì un’operazione lungamente studiata, quanto in alto ancora non si sa, ma sicuramente organizzata e finanziata dalla P2, insieme a pezzi dello Stato e saldando le sigle della galassia dell’eversione nera. Tutto questo in una logica di continuità con gli anni settanta: quell’aspra stagione della strategia della tensione, insomma, che nell’agosto del 1980 l’Italia sembrava aver definitivamente archiviato, ma che – per chi ne reggeva i fili – non era invece affatto conclusa.

È la strage di Bologna, 2 agosto 1980, la più grave della storia della Repubblica. L’unica per la quale siano stati individuati, e puniti, dei colpevoli. Al termine di una lunga e complessa storia giudiziaria, sono stati condannati in via definitiva Valerio Fioravanti, Francesca Mambro, all’epoca a capo della principale organizzazione terrorista di estrema destra, i Nuclei armati rivoluzionari, Luigi Ciavardini, allora minorenne e, in primo grado, Gilberto Cavallini. Rei confessi di molti omicidi, Fioravanti e Mambro, come pure gli altri condannati, hanno però sempre negato ogni responsabilità nella strage e da anni si battono per una revisione del processo. Ma per il più feroce crimine della storia italiana non sono stati individuati né un movente né i mandanti, e anche perciò la condanna di Mambro e Fioravanti ha suscitato non poche perplessità tra giornalisti e politici come Rossana Rossanda, Paolo Mieli e l’ex presidente della commissione stragi Giovanni Pellegrino. Nel 2007, a 27 anni di distanza, Mambro e Fioravanti si sono decisi a raccontare la loro verità, su Bologna e sul terrorismo nero.
