Trotz stetem Interesse der DDR an politischen und vor allem wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zu Argentinien gestalteten sich diese zunächst schwierig. Schuld daran war neben den bis 1973 fehlenden diplomatischen Beziehungen die wirtschaftliche und politische Instabilität Argentiniens. So entstanden zunächst Kontakte zwischen Außenhandelsunternehmen und Institutionen und eine diskret agierende DDR-Handelsvertretung in Buenos Aires, bis sie 1962 geschlossen wurde. Erst während der argentinischen Militärdiktatur 1976-1983 stabilisierten sich die Beziehungen. Aufgrund Argentiniens politischer und wirtschaftlicher Isolierung vom Westen nahm die Bedeutung des Ostblocks als Handelspartner zu. Im Falklandkrieg stellte sich die DDR-Diplomatie auf die argentinische Seite und davon profitierten die Beziehungen auch nach dem Regierungswechsel und der Rückkehr Argentiniens zur Demokratie 1983. Die Kooperation weitete sich nun auf außen- und geopolitische Bereiche aus. Erst der Fall der Berliner Mauer beendete die Projekte zur wirtschaftlichen und politischen Zusammenarbeit abrupt.

L'ordine sociale? Un organismo naturale conforme alla volontà di Dio. Gerarchia, unanimità, corporativismo erano i pilastri; la fede il collante; lo Stato etico il guardiano. Peronismo, castrismo, chavismo: i più potenti populismi latini sono uniti da quel filo. Da esso emana la teologia del popolo che ispira papa Francesco. C'era una volta, predicano, un popolo puro che viveva in armonia e condivideva una cultura formata dalla sua fede. Ma ecco le idee 'straniere', il liberalismo senza patria, i protestanti individualisti, il capitalismo egoista, il secolarismo indifferente a Dio corromperne l'anima, disgregarne l'unità, minacciarne l'identità. Contro tali eterni nemici dei popoli d'America s'erge il leader populista, redentore che brandendo la croce della fede e la spada della giustizia sottrae il popolo eletto alla schiavitù e lo conduce alla terra promessa. Non tutti i populismi latini sono gesuiti, né tutti i gesuiti sono populisti. In tutti i 'populismi gesuiti' è però evidente l'impronta gesuita. Per tutti combattere la ricchezza, fonte di corruzione, è più importante che estirpare la 'santa povertà', garanzia di moralità. Studiandoli, questo libro indaga le radici culturali delle grandi piaghe storiche dell'America Latina: autoritarismo, povertà, disuguaglianza.
