In Tosca's Rome, Susan Vandiver Nicassio explores the surprising historical realities that lie behind Giacomo Puccini's opera and the play by Victorien Sardou on which it is based. By far the most "historical" opera in the active repertoire, Tosca is set in a very specific time and place: Rome, from June 17 to 18, 1800. But as Nicassio demonstrates, history in Tosca is distorted by nationalism and by the vehement anticlerical perceptions of papal Rome shared by Sardou, Puccini, and the librettists. La storia del Teatro a Civitavecchia risulta emblematica: essa riveste una particolare importanza perché nel suo fluire sono facilmente distinguibili quattro fasi che rappresentano altrettanti momenti caratterizzanti delle trasformazioni della nostra società. Il Settecento con il Minozzi, l’Ottocento con il Teatro comunale Traiano, il Novecento con il Cinema teatro prima e con il nuovo Teatro Traiano poi. Quattro fasi e quattro epoche diverse. Segue ovviamente le trasformazioni sociali ed economiche della città e non soltanto. Si riflettono su di esso i mutamenti epocali che in questi quasi tre secoli si sono avuti e ne esce un quadro della società italiana, dei suoi gusti, dei suoi orientamenti, della sua base sociale, importante e denso di interesse. Cambiano i protagonisti, i generi, gli spettatori, i modi di gestione del Teatro. Si intrecciano profondamente ed in modo esplicito la proposta culturale e le modifiche strutturali. Cambia l’architettura, l’offerta di spettacoli, il pubblico, l’organizzazione interna del teatro, in stretto rapporto con le trasformazioni dell’economia, della composizione sociale, del potere. FABRIZIO BARBARANELLI è nato a Civitavecchia. Ha collaborato negli anni settanta con la casa editrice Samonà e Savelli, poi Edizioni Savelli. È stato dirigente sindacale e nel 1982 è stato eletto al Consiglio regionale del Lazio da cui si è dimesso per assumere l’incarico di sindaco di Civitavecchia. È stato membro del consiglio di amministrazione del Teatro di Roma e sovrintendente del Teatro Comunale Traiano di Civitavecchia. Per l’editore Gangemi ha pubblicato nel 2001 il romanzo Prigionieri di un incubo. È autore anche di altre pubblicazioni. Si è laureato in Lettere con indirizzo Studi Italiani presso l’Università la Sapienza di Roma con una tesi sul teatro a Civitavecchia. ENRICO CIANCARINI è nato a Civitavecchia. Si è laureato in lettere con indirizzo Storia Moderna e Contemporanea all’Università la Sapienza di Roma con una tesi in Storia del Risorgimento. Il suo interesse storiografico è rivolto prevalentemente alla storia dell’Ottocento e del Novecento italiano, con particolare attenzione alla formazione del nuovo stato unitario. È autore di volumi sulla storia di Civitavecchia fra Ottocento e primo Novecento. Ha collaborato con il Dizionario biografico degli anarchici italiani e collabora con il Dizionario Biografico degli italiani. È socio fondatore e presidente della Società Storica Civitavecchiese di cui cura il bollettino semestrale.
