These tightly rhythmic, compact eight-line poems demonstrate a rare deftness with—and an even more uncommon ear for—language, revealing poetic form to be neither a puzzle nor an accomplishment in itself, but a compositional tool and a spur to creativity.

The Clouds Float North written by Yu Xuanji and has been published by Wesleyan University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-11-20 with Literary Criticism categories.

“Outside of her remarkable poems, we know next to nothing about Yu Xuanji,” David Young writes. “She was born in 844 and died in 868, at the age of twenty-four, condemned to death for the murder of her maid…We owe the survival of her forty-nine poems to the ancient Chinese anthologists’ urge to be complete.” The poems gathered in this bilingual (Chinese/English) edition will be read again and again for their beauty. The works preserve Yu Xuanji’s passion, her sharp eye for detail, her often witty variations on familiar Chinese themes, all of which give the poems an immediacy one rarely finds in ancient, translated texts. Poems addressed to Yu Xuanji’s husband and to other men (some famous poets) and women give us some sense of her relationships; the book also includes other traditional Chinese forms such as meditations on landscapes and occasional poems commemorating feast days. As noted in the introduction, the poetry also provokes us to think about the act of writing, about the culture and politics of the T’ang Dynasty, and about gender.

Unmatched in scope and literary quality, this landmark anthology spans three thousand years, bringing together more than six hundred poems by more than one hundred thirty poets, in translations–many new and exclusive to the book–by an array of distinguished translators. Here is the grand sweep of Chinese poetry, from the Book of Songs–ancient folk songs said to have been collected by Confucius himself–and Laozi’s Dao De Jing to the vividly pictorial verse of Wang Wei, the romanticism of Li Po, the technical brilliance of Tu Fu, and all the way up to the twentieth-century poetry of Mao Zedong and the post—Cultural Revolution verse of the Misty poets. Encompassing the spiritual, philosophical, political, mystical, and erotic strains that have emerged over millennia, this broadly representative selection also includes a preface on the art of translation, a general introduction to Chinese poetic form, biographical headnotes for each of the poets, and concise essays on the dynasties that structure the book. The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry captures with impressive range and depth the essence of China’s illustrious poetic tradition.

The poems in the author's second volume continue the authors love of simplicity and the beauties of nature. His world travels have enlarged his mental library of poetic styles and influences. Many of these poems resulted from an interest in ancient Chinese poets, such as Li Po and Du Fu, and reflect the submergence or abnegation of self. Hence, nature becomes the subject, not the poets emotional reaction to it. A second theme is close examination of what many would treat as casual observation and simply disregard. But these mind-grabbing eye-stoppers offer rich imagery and opportunities for thoughtful word play in the authors world. While most of these poems are short, the author can also spin a tale with longer poems from his own experiences or from the imagination spurred from actual observation. Storytelling, observation, and natureall in simple, earnest language.

The half-dozen generations from 100 B.C. to A.D. 100 were epoch-making in Chinese history, and there is a real need for "vignetting sketches of manner, character, and thought" based on documents identifiable as to date and authorship. Fortunately such documents are available in the fu (Chinese literary form) on the Two Capitals by Pan Ku and Chang Heng. Insights into Han life and beliefs are offered through the translation and paraphrase of the fu, with extensive critique and commentary. Originally published in 1960. The Songs Of Chu written by Yuan Qu and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-18 with Poetry categories.

Sources show Qu Yuan (?340–278 BCE) was the first person in China to become famous for his poetry, so famous in fact that the Chinese celebrate his life with a national holiday called Poet's Day, or the Dragon Boat Festival. His work, which forms the core of the The Songs of Chu, the second oldest anthology of Chinese poetry, derives its imagery from shamanistic ritual. Its shaman hymns are among the most beautiful and mysterious liturgical works in the world. The religious milieu responsible for their imagery supplies the backdrop for his most famous work, Li sao, which translates shamanic longing for a spirit lover into the yearning for an ideal king that is central to the ancient philosophies of China. Qu Yuan was as important to the development of Chinese literature as Homer was to the development of Western literature. This translation attempts to replicate what the work might have meant to those for whom it was originally intended, rather than settle for what it was made to mean by those who inherited it. It accounts for the new view of the state of Chu that recent discoveries have inspired.

Erratum A Recital of the Chinese Poems - Hear what they sound like The book introduces Chinese culture to readers of English, using poetry from the various periods rendered into English verse to bring back to life past Chinese society as it developed from about 1000 B.C to the form we see today. With China's increasing importance on the world stage today, many readers, no doubt, would want to learn more about its ancient culture. However, to learn about a culture from its history alone, especially one as long as that of China, is time-consuming and requires a historian's expert skill. This book offers the general reader a direct glimpse into the human core of it via the universally accessible channel of poetry. It provides an outline of Chinese history from prehistoric times to the present printed mostly on left-hand pages, accompanied on the right by a selection of Chinese poems of the corresponding periods translated into English verse by the author. The poems total about eighty in number and come mostly from the classical phase dating from around 1000 B.C. to 1200 A.D. Keywords:China;History;Poetry;CultureKey Features:Unique combination of Chinese history and poetry woven into an easily readable organic wholeCan be read through as a story with the poems serving as illustrations for the historical narrativeCan be kept and enjoyed as a short anthology of Chinese poetry set in its historical backgroundReviews: “In tracing the poetic footprints in Chinese history, the author combines the precision of a scientist …, the refined taste of a lettré, the concern of a humanist …, and the acute sense of rhyme and rhythm of a creative writer … In viticultural terms, the author has selected grapes from an excellent vineyard and transformed them into mellow wine for your appreciation.” Yau Shun-chiu Emeritus Director of Research The French National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS) “Rarely is there an anthology of Chinese poetry Translator one single individual, not a team, and yet comprehensive in its selection. Chan Hong-Mo has done it … by treating poetry with not only inspired translation but also a sense of history that would transport modern-day readers back into the original context of each poem. This bridge brings together, too, the poetic traditions of east and west, in sentiments as well as musical patterns … ” E. S. P. Almberg-Ng Professor Formerly of the Department of Translation in the Chinese University of Hong Kong “This book is a gem. What a novel idea to view Chinese history through the eyes of its most famous poets. The poems are well chosen and expertly translated … I thoroughly enjoyed and learnt much from this articulate and artistic book, written with scholarship and devotion.” Sir David Todd Emeritus Professor University of Hong Kong “ … We meet, across this great span of time, the real people who make history come alive: the soldier returning home as an old man to find his village deserted, the young man tempted away from work by a girl ‘with spring time in her heart’, … and many others. We could not get better proof that human emotions were the same centuries ago as they are now … Dr Chan's fluent translations enable us to appreciate the beauty of the poems …” Janet Morgan District Councillor The Vale of White Horse, Oxford “ … The book gave me the opportunity to learn about the country, its people, history and culture. It manages to be both condensed in contents, and easy to read, being written in a style accessible even to readers, like me, whose mother tongue is not English … The most striking feature is that, in reading these poems …, you make discoveries about life in your own country, which shares similar worries and joys …” Jose Bordes Chaired Professor (catedratico) in theoretical physics at the University of Valencia, Spain
