Molto è stato scritto e detto sui fatti di Otranto seppure, talvolta, con ridondanze non convincenti. Tuttavia, realtà incontrovertibili rimangono la deportazione verso Oriente di un numero indefinito di giovani otrantini e l'eccidio di massa: più di ottocento maschi adulti sono stati decapitati in un giorno di agosto del 1480, al tramonto di un lunghissimo Medioevo. Deve essere stato talmente drammatico lo svolgersi del macabro sterminio che il boia, da carnefice implacabile, divenne vittima a sua volta. Un altro dato è certo: chi doveva difendere quelle Terre non c'era e non è accorso e, tra i pochi che c'erano, alcuni hanno tagliato la corda. Per tale circostanza, il popolo di una piccola città del Salento si è ritrovato, quasi da solo, a difendersi da un'intera Armata turca. Tutto ciò, ancor oggi, può animare una penna per trarne l'ennesimo racconto: la vicenda, reale, dell'immane tragedia, intrecciata con quella, fantastica, di un tenero amore che simboleggia la rinascita della città.
