Ne L’innocente (1892), il protagonista Tullio Hermil racconta in prima persona la propria storia di adultero impenitente che, riavvicinatosi alla moglie, scopre che lei ha in grembo il frutto di un unico tradimento. L’odio verso questa innocente creatura, colpevole di rappresentare l’infrangersi del suo assurdo e crudele sogno di «essere costantemente infedele a una donna costantemente fedele», lo porterà lucidamente a meditarne e poi a metterne in atto l’assassinio. Altro personaggio decadente è il Giorgio Aurispa di Trionfo della morte (1894), nobile ereditiero che tenta di fare della propria vita un’opera d’arte, abbandonandosi alla passione amorosa, senza riuscire a liberarsi di un letale male di vivere, che lo porterà al suicidio. Il fuoco (1900), infine, ha una sensuale Venezia come scenario dell’appassionato amore tra il geniale poeta Stelio Effrena e l’attrice Foscarina: una relazione che ricorda quella, assai nota e discussa, tra il Vate ed Eleonora Duse. Gabriele D'Annunzio (Pescara 1863 - Gardone Riviera 1938) esordì giovanissimo con la raccolta di versi Primo Vere. La sua vastissima produzione poetica, narrativa, drammatica, tradotta in tutte le lingue, ebbe risonanza mondiale. Dopo la composizione delle Laudi, divenne il “vate nazionale”. Eroe della prima guerra mondiale e “comandante” di Fiume, fu considerato a lungo un “maestro di vita”.
