Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Other States, grade: 1,3, University of Cooperative Education Mannheim, language: English, abstract: We're selling Iceland," quoted the Financial Times in November 2007 after an interview with Jon Olafsson, CEO of Icelandic Glacial. "The purity and coolness of the island - because Iceland is very cool and hip these days." Though this statement is refered to the water product, it demonstrated the high interest in the island itself. As many know, Iceland is the country where one can witness the phenomenons of Mother Nature: tremendous icecaps and several glaciers, raging rivers and magnificent waterfalls, spouting geysers and steaming solfatara, volcanoes, a multitude of birds and whales. The spectacular landscape is one reason why Iceland's tourism is successful. But in recent years Iceland also drew the attention of many industries to itself. For example, many technological and telecommuniational products have been outsourced in Europe towards Iceland as it provides many competitive advantages in these fields. Iceland is unique: it is the smallest economy in the world that has its own currency and a flexible exchange rate. It is also an advanced country with excellent institutions meaning low corruption index, the rule of law, a highly educated population and more (cf. Iceland Chamber of Commerce 2006). For most of the 1990s the island presented one of the highest consistent growth rates in the world and low inflation and unemployment. Particularly the resource management in the mainstay fisheries sector, price stability and diversification of the industry contributed to this economic record. The paper on hand gives an outline of the country. To begin with general information about the island is described. This includes demographic as well as historical and political aspects. The third chapter sketches the development and structure of the Icelandic economy. C

This book is the first comprehensive overview and evaluation of the origins, history and current size and condition of all of Iceland's major glaciers (including Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe) at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It is not only illustrated with many beautiful photographs and graphs of recent statistics and scientific data, but is also a collection of historical writings and drawings from annals, sagas, folk tales, diaries, reports, stories and poems, as it presents a unique approach to the study of glaciers on an island in the North Atlantic. Balancing and comparing the world of man with the world of nature, the perceptions of art and culture with the systematic and pragmatic analyses of science, The Glaciers of Iceland present a wide spectrum of readers with a new and stimulating view of the origins, development and possible future of these massive natural phenomena, as well as the study and role of glaciology, within specific time lines and geographical locations. Icelandic glaciers the author argues could prove essential for understanding the current unsettling progress of global warming. The glaciers of Iceland, therefore, aims at presenting to a wide readership an original, historical, cultural and scientific overview of these geophysical features in Iceland while also suggesting increasingly important lessons and models for man's future interaction with the world's glaciers as a whole.

Iceland is an island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean, with a population of approximately 360,000 people. It is known for its stunning natural beauty, including glaciers, geysers, volcanoes, and hot springs. The country is situated on a hot spot, which means it experiences a high level of geothermal activity. This has led to the development of geothermal energy, which is used to heat homes and buildings throughout the country. Iceland is also home to a unique culture that has been shaped by the country's isolation and harsh environment. The country has a rich history that dates back to the Viking age, and many of its cultural traditions and customs have been passed down through generations. These include the Icelandic language, which remains largely unchanged from the ancient Norse language spoken by the Vikings, and the country's strong literary tradition, which has produced many famous writers and poets over the years. Today, Iceland is a popular tourist destination, known for its outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, and whale watching, as well as its vibrant music and arts scene.

Iceland provides an unique stage on which to study the natural environment, both past and present, and it is understanding both aspects of reconstructing the past and observing and interpreting the present that form the focus of the contributions to this volume. The papers are all written by active researchers and incorporate both reviews and new data. Although concentrating largely on the recent Quaternary timescale a wide range of topics is explored including subglacial volcanism, onshore and offshore evidence for the Last Glacial Maximum and subsequent deglaciation, current glacial characteristics including jökulhlaups and glacial landsystems, soil development, Holocene ecosystem change, current oceanography, impacts of volcanic sulphur loading, chemical weathering and the CO2 budget and documentary evidence for historical climate. The key element of the volume is that for the first time it provides a wide overview of a range of topics for which Iceland provides an almost unparalleled laboratory emphasizing the importance of research on this small island for studies over a much broader global scale. These reviews point the way to future research directions and are supplemented by extensive illustrations and a comprehensive bibliography. * Wide range of related topics covered both from a present day and quaternary perspective * Reviews from scientists active in each research area across a range of subjects providing both overviews and new data supplemented by an extensive bibliography * Extensive illustrations and examples from the field

Based upon the most recent research, this thought-provoking, up-to-date survey of the history of Iceland provides unique insight into the challenges facing a small nation in a globalized world. In more recent times, Iceland has faced other major challenges, most notably its economic fall in 2008 when a nationwide failure of its financial systems eroded it from its former position as one of the most developed and wealthiest countries in the world. The History of Iceland describes how a small nation situated on a rocky and isolated island struggled for centuries to survive but then rose to great prosperity in the modern era. The work provides a comprehensive summary of Iceland's history that shares a tale of independence versus interdependence-one that underscores how recent events have forced a people with great pride in their unique heritage to reconsider well-established notions about themselves as a nation. Based on the most recent research, this work is the first comprehensive overview to cover in detail the collapse of Iceland's economy and its subsequent effect on its people. Organized into seven main sections that chronologically cover the history of Iceland from the island's settlement to the present day, the book concludes with a revealing discussion of how each period has been perceived by later generations of Icelanders.
