Warum hat Matthäus eigentlich ein weiteres Evangelium geschrieben? Es gab ja schon eins. Und Matthäus "kopiert" es fast vollständig. Was bewegt ihn dazu, nur etwa zehn Jahre nach der Entstehung des Markusevangeliums eine eigene Version der Erzählung zu veröffentlichen? Der Petriner Matthäus und der Pauliner Markus haben grundverschiedene Anschauungen. Das können wir deshalb schlecht erkennen, weil wir (durch jahrhundertelange Konditionierung) gewohnt sind, die Evangelien in der Bibel zu harmonisieren. Wir sehen nicht mehr die Gegensätze, sondern ihre Harmonisierung durch die Partei, die sich durchgesetzt hat: die Pauliner. Ganz vieles von Markus übernimmt Matthäus unbeanstandet. Aber erst dort, wo er korrigiert und das markinische Profil verändert, erkennen wir beides: sowohl den Beweggrund für seine eigene Evangeliumsversion als auch, im Kontrast dazu, das Spezifische des Markusevangeliums.

Matthew's two stories of sabbath controversy contain key materials on the relations between Jesus and the sabbath. Deploying both socio-historical and literary criticisms, the author concludes that for Matthew the sabbath is fulfilled by Jesus-that is to say, Jesus' redemption has fulfilled the ultimate goal for the sabbath. The christological and eschatological character of these stories is thus apparent, and Yang suggests that such an emphasis, over against the Pharisees' casuistic concerns, betrays Matthew's awareness of the danger of a legalistic tendency in sabbath observance among members of his community.
