The claim that Jesus was criticised by the Pharisees for performing cures on the Sabbath has been continuously repeated for almost 2,000 years. But a meticulous, unprejudiced evaluation of the relevant gospel texts shows that the historical Jesus was never criticised by historical Pharisees for performing Sabbath cures. In fact, Jesus and the Pharisees were in complete agreement for the need for cures on the Sabbath day. It is also clear that the Sabbath healing events in the gospels have preserved a significant part of the history of the early Jewish debate which sought to resolve the apparent conflict between the demands of Jewish law, and the performance of deeds of healing and/or saving life. This debate, from its Maccabean origins through to the end of the second century CE, is the subject of this book. The story of the debate has escaped the attention of historians partly because it relies on the evidence of both the early postbiblical Jewish texts and the Christian gospels, which are not generally studied together.

Today with so many changes in society, stress in our daily lives, and mistrusts among nations it is important to look to the Bible for guidance and inspiration. God still speaks to men through His Word. Matthew focuses on Jesus as the Messiah and the King. He demonstrates that Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the promise God had made to Israel. Although Matthew does not have the universal appeal of Luke, he does show how Gentiles were a part of Jesus’ ministry in spite of His desire to focus on the people of Israel. They are represented in the genealogy, in the visit of the Magi, in the healing of the centurion’s servant, the deliverance of the daughter of the Syrophoenician woman, the centralization of His ministry in “Galilee of the Gentiles,” and in the Great Commission. The commentary is an exposition of the Gospel of Matthew, which considers the context, historical background, parallel passages of Scripture, in addition to theological principles. It includes a bibliography, charts, maps, and other helps. Its contents are designed to help pastors, teachers, and Bible students to read the Gospel of Matthew with greater clarity and understanding, and helps them proclaim God’s Word with power and conviction. This new commentary on the Gospel of Matthew provides the scholar, student, and ministry practitioner with access to the Gospel. It opens Matthew’s message of Jesus as the Messiah and King with clarity and emphasis. One comes away from the commentary encouraged to proclaim that same message—Jesus is the Messiah and King! James Railey, Jr., PhD, Former Academic Dean A/G Theological Seminary Dr. Charles Estridge has given students and preachers of Scripture a great gift in this new Gospel commentary. His study of Matthew is wide-ranging in its sources, faithful to the plain meaning of Scripture, concise in structure, warmly pastoral in application, and irenic in its discussion of varying viewpoints. Best of all, the serious student of God’s Word will find spiritual bread here which he or she can feed to others who hunger for the Word of God. Enjoy this exposition of Matthew’s five discourses on the teachings and life of the Messiah—the One who inherited the Kingdom of David and fulfilled the world-changing promises made to Abraham! Paul York, PhD, Chi Alpha Missions Training and Mobilization Dr. Charles Estridge is a capable scholar and a ministry practitioner with years of experience in pastoral ministry and theological training in bible schools in America and Africa. Moreover, he is a man who loves Jesus Christ and who has spent his life in service for the Church. Pastors, teachers, and students of the Bible will find his commentary full of insight into the message of the Gospel of Matthew. It demonstrates careful exegesis and practical reflection on the meaning of the text. It is a valuable tool that will help those called by God to preach and teach His word. I highly recommend it. In the Christian Church the Gospel of Matthew has been considered the most important portrait of Jesus' life and message. Containing Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and a uniquely rich collection of parables, among many other things, Matthew has made a major contribution to the church throughout the centuries, and it still has much to say to the church today. This superb commentary in the Pillar series explores the meaning and relevance of Matthew in an eminently straightforward fashion. Leon Morris writes for readers who use commentaries to discover further what the Bible means. Throughout, he makes clear what he considers to be the meaning of the Greek text that Matthew has bequeathed to the church. A perceptive introduction precedes Morris's warmhearted verse-by-verse exposition of Matthew, an exposition based on his own literal translation of the text. Now a standard reference work on the Gospel of Matthew, this mature, evangelically oriented commentary will continue to meet the needs of students, pastor, and general readers alike.

JESUS IN Q is about the Sabbath and the theology of Jesus. There are several books about the Sabbath with regard to the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, but nothing regarding Q. This book is designed to address the relation to the Sabbath in Q which makes it remarkable amongst other Sabbath related books with reference to the Synoptic Gospels. Considering the rabbinic writers and the early fathers, who have used, generally in a free way, the sayings of Jesus drawn from the Gospels and/or oral tradition, this book examines the apologists and the extracanonical writers, whose writings constitute a well-defined literary genre and witness a progressively more bookish use of the sayings of Jesus. This book understands the extracanonical documents in early Judaism as a prerequisite for understanding the appearances of Jesus.

The Gospel of Matthew is the first book in the New Testament. It truly is a “teaching” Gospel. It serves as an important resource for learning about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The Apostles needed this teaching so that they could effectively form the foundation upon which the future Christian church would be built. They needed this teaching to obey the commandment which Jesus gave them: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.” (Matt.28:19-20) Using an easy-to-understand format, The Gospel of Matthew offers an in-depth study that reveals why Christ’s presence forever changed the world. Author Carol Walker explores the true nature of Jesus, his mission on Earth, and his ministry. From his birth to his death and resurrection, Walker recounts Jesus’ life and, in so doing, reveals how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy. Walker presents thirty-four lessons that cover the twenty-eight chapters of Matthew. Each chapter is summarized to provide historical and cultural background information and a question and answer section presents an opportunity for further discussion. Lessons include the important work of the Holy Spirit, the ministry of John the Baptist, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ interpretation of the Ten Commandments, and much more. The Gospel of Matthew presents a comprehensive study for individuals or groups. If you’re seeking to expand your knowledge of Jesus’ life and teachings and want to deepen your faith, let this be your guide.

What does the Sabbath mean to you? Christ in the Sabbath will take you on a “Sabbath tour” of the Bible. You’ll explore the themes of Shabbat (Hebrew for Sabbath) and rest in both Old and New Testament and then discover what it has meant to Jews and Christians for centuries. Rabbinical comments and a variety of traditions provide clarity and credibility to the study of Sabbath. While this volume does not resolve all the differences among Christians concerning the place of the Sabbath today, the journey undertaken in this book will help you in forming your own conclusions—or inspire you to continue exploring the meaning and significance behind the Sabbath.
