November 2013, - alleine für unbestimmte Zeit -mindestens aber für 6 Wochen - mit dem Wohnmobil nach Spanien fahren und mal so richtig abschalten. Das erste Mal in meinem inzwischen fast 30-jährigen Berufsleben habe ich die Möglichkeit so lange ich will (oder kann) Urlaub zu machen. Etwa 9 Jahre lang war ich jetzt in der Geschäftsleitung (und als Gesellschafter) in einem kleinen mittelständischen Betrieb tätig, wobei alleine diese neun Jahre Stoff für eine ganze Buchreihe hergeben. Aus den verschiedensten Gründen, die letztlich aber alle gesundheitliche Auswirkungen hatten, habe ich Mitte 2013 beschlossen alles aufzugeben (sowohl den Job als auch die Unternehmensanteile) und dem Leben zu vertrauen, dass es einen Weg und eine Lösung für mich bereithält. Jetzt ist es soweit und es geht los. Geplant und doch überraschend - wie Weihnachten. Auf ins Land der im Wohnmobil überwinternden Rentner und Briten ... Begonnen als Reisetagebuch und tägliche Mailberichterstattung nach Hause, entwickelte sich zunehmend ein "augenzwinkernder Blick" auf meine Umgebung. Natürlich ist das eine oder andere in den Tagesberichten ein wenig ausgeschmückt, manches war aber auch noch viel extremer, z.B. die weihnachtlichen blauen LED-Lichterketten und die weihnachtliche Motive zaubernden computergesteuerten Laser der Briten. Es hat sich aber alles so zugetragen und ich möchte nochmal ausdrücklich darauf hinweisen, dass ich nichts gegen Rentner oder Briten habe. Ich habe in den 40 Tagen sehr viele supernette Menschen unterschiedlichster Art kennengelernt und möchte nichts und niemanden davon missen (auch nicht die Lache von Claudia, die auf ihre Art ihren ganz eigenen Charme hatte).

Moore's present-day companions are no less florid or poignant. Clearly more interested in Shinto than in Moore, their fellow walkers are an assortment of devout Christian pilgrims, New Age spirituality seekers, travelers grieving over a lost love affair, Baby Boomers contemplating the advent of middle age, and John Q. Public just out for a cheap, boozy sun-drenched outdoor holiday. As Moore pushes, pulls, wheedles, cajoles, and threatens Shinto across Spain toward the crypt of St. James in a quest to find the spiritual pilgrim within, the duo overnights in the bedrooms, dormitories, and---for Shinto---adjacent grassy fields of northern Spain's hostels, inns, convents, seminaries, and farmhouses. Shinto, a donkey with a finely honed talent for relieving himself at the most inopportune moments, has better luck in the search for his next meal than Moore does in finding his inner St. Francis. Undaunted, however, Man and Beast finally arrive at the cathedral and a successful end to their journey.
