The near-ubiquitous spread of ICT offers unprecedented opportunities for social and economic agents, reshapes social and economic structures and drives the emergence of socioeconomic networks. This book contributes to the growing body of literature and present state of knowledge, offering the reader broad evidence on how new information and communication technologies impact women’s economic and social empowerment and hence have an impact on overall welfare creation. More specifically, it concentrates on demonstrating how ICT may become "empowering technologies" through their implementation. The book is designed to provide deep insight into the theoretical and empirical evidence on ICT as a significant driver of women`s social and economic development. Special focus is given to examining the following broad topics: channels of ICT impact on women's development; the role of ICT in enhancing women's active participation in formal labor markets; examples of how ICT encourages education, skills development, institutions development et alia, and thus contributes to women’s social and economic empowerment, as well as case-based evidence on ICT's role in fostering women’s equality. The primary audience for the book will be scholars and academic professionals from a wide variety of disciplines but mainly those who are concerned with addressing the issues of economic development and growth, social development, the role of technology progress in the context of broadly defined socioeconomic progress. This paper reviews how women in the developing world access and use information and communication technology (ICT). It examines the discourse and controversies surrounding the digital gender divide, including links to poverty and illiteracy. Major themes concerning women and ICTs are explored, such as women in the ICT workforce, how girls and women relate differently to ICT, and opportunities and barriers for women in science and technology in general. Current research relating to gender and ICT is often country-specific and is more prevalent in developed countries than in developing countries. This paper suggests where additional research is needed on barriers to women s entry and access to ICT. The overall objective of this paper is to influence policy dialogue around women and ICT for development by raising awareness of the digital gender divide. Economic opportunity for women in ICT will not be realized until policies address gender considerations and ensure that ICT investment contributes to more sustainable and equitable development.

In the global discourse on ICTs, the concern so far has primarily been outsourcing and the loss of service sector jobs from the developed world. This book focuses, instead, on the positive aspects of the digital economy as they relate to women in the developing world. It illustrates—with case studies from Argentina, Morocco, India, Malaysia and the Philippines—how economic empowerment through the medium of ICTs can change the position of women within their families and the workplace, even in the face of uneven development processes. This timely volume, which is rooted in primary and original research, illuminates the gender-related facets of the emergent information society while raising key questions about the implications of the digital economy on women`s work and lives.

The role of information and communication technologies as a tool for development has attracted the sustained attention of various agencies worldwide. If the gender dimensions of information and communication technologies—in terms of access and use, capacity-building opportunities, employment, and potential for empowerment—are explicitly identified and addressed, information and communication technologies can be a powerful catalyst for the political and social empowerment of women and the promotion of gender equality. ICT as a Driver of Women’s Social and Economic Empowerment contributes to the growing body of literature and present state of knowledge by offering evidence on how new information and communication technologies impact women’s economic and social empowerment and overall welfare creation leading to inclusive growth. Covering key topics such as economics, entrepreneurship, digital technologies, and inclusion, this premier reference source is ideal for industry professionals, policymakers, administrators, business owners, managers, researchers, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.

In the global pursuit of equitable progress, the empowerment of women emerges as not merely an ethical imperative but a pragmatic necessity. The imperative of women's economic empowerment finds resonance throughout history, woven into the fabric of social movements, policy reforms, and economic progress. From the suffragette movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries to the landmark conventions on women's rights and development in the latter half of the 20th century, the trajectory of gender equality has been marked by both triumphs and trials. The 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing stands as a watershed moment, galvanizing global commitments to women's empowerment and setting forth an ambitious agenda for action. Subsequent milestones, including the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, further underscore the intertwined nature of gender equality and sustainable development. Over the years though the researchers, academicians and government have tried to find ways and means for economic empowerment of women many aspects of women economic empowerment-entrepreneurship and innovation, work place equality, global partnership etc are yet to be completely resolved. Little attention has been paid to the above aspects by the researchers, policy makers and development planners. The present volume titled “"Economic Empowerment of Women for Sustainable Development" containing 32 papers covers different aspects and issues related to economic empowerment of women and sustainable development. It is an initiative for shedding light on the pivotal role women play in fostering sustainable economic development. The main themes with the volume covers are: financial inclusion, education skill development, technology and digital inclusion, leadership, decision making, policy and advocacy. The volume will provide women’s input and health for the academicians, researchers, policy makers and government officials.

The present work is an out come of the urge to reach out and explore the inner recesses of personal and employed professional lives of highly technically qualified women. The subject of the study emerged from a practical revelation to the variety of problems and conflicts encountered by women both in domestic and job front. The problem will examined in this study is the social origin and familiar adjustment of women in modern occupations such as teaching, medical, engineering, legal, administration, journalism and IT profession. The basic assumption is that educational achievement of women and their entrance into modern occupation like Information and Communication Technology is largely a reflection of the socio-economic status of families to which these women belong. Therefore, the present study will attempt to correlate the socio-economic status of the women's family with their educational achievement and with their recruitment in ICT sector.

This book investigates the barriers to women’s economic empowerment in the Global South. Drawing on evidence from a wide range of countries, the book outlines important lessons and practical solutions for promoting gender equality. Despite global progress in closing gender gaps in education and health, women’s economic empowerment has lagged behind, with little evidence that economic growth promotes gender equality. International Development Research Centre’s (IDRC) Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) programme was set up to provide policy lessons, insights, and concrete solutions that could lead to advances in gender equality, particularly on the role of institutions and macroeconomic growth, barriers to labour market access for women, and the impact of women’s care responsibilities. This book showcases rigorous and multi-disciplinary research emerging from this ground-breaking programme, covering topics such as the school-to-work transition, child marriage, unpaid domestic work and childcare, labour market segregation, and the power of social and cultural norms that prevent women from fully participating in better paid sectors of the economy. With a range of rich case studies from Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nepal, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Uganda, this book is perfect for students, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working on women’s economic empowerment and gender equality in the Global South.
