In a previous volume (ICT-Energy-Concepts Towards Zero-Power ICT; referenced below as Vol. 1), we addressed some of the fundamentals related to bridging the gap between the amount of energy required to operate portable/mobile ICT systems and the amount of energy available from ambient sources. The only viable solution appears to be to attack the gap from both sides, i.e. to reduce the amount of energy dissipated during computation and to improve the efficiency in energy-harvesting technologies. In this book, we build on those concepts and continue the discussion on energy efficiency and sustainability by addressing the minimisation of energy consumption at different levels across the ICT system stack, from hardware to software, as well as discussing energy consumption issues in high-performance computing (HPC), data centres and communication in sensor networks. This book was realised thanks to the contribution of the project ‘Coordinating Research Efforts of the ICT-Energy Community’ funded from the European Union under the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) area of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (grant agreement n. 611004).

Electrostatic Kinetic Energy Harvesting written by Philippe Basset and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Harvesting kinetic energy is a good opportunity to power wireless sensor in a vibratory environment. Besides classical methods based on electromagnetic and piezoelectric mechanisms, electrostatic transduction has a great perspective in particular when dealing with small devices based on MEMS technology. This book describes in detail the principle of such capacitive Kinetic Energy Harvesters based on a spring-mass system. Specific points related to the design and operation of kinetic energy harvesters (KEHs) with a capacitive interface are presented in detail: advanced studies on their nonlinear features, typical conditioning circuits and practical MEMS fabrication.

Wireless Powered Communication Networks written by Abbas Jamalipour and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-12 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This textbook introduces Wireless Powered Communication Networks (WPCNs) as a promising paradigm to overcome the energy bottleneck suffered by traditional wireless communication networks, as well as emerging Internet-of-Things networks. It selectively spans a coherent spectrum of fundamental aspects in WPCNs, such as wireless energy transfer (WEH) techniques, radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting receiver model, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), as well as the rate-energy tradeoff arising from the joint transmission of information and energy using the same waveform. It covers network models for WPCNs, including the baseline and dual-hop WPCN models and a variety of related extensions. This book further examines the key factors including throughput, fairness, and security that must be taken into account for impeccable operation of WPCNs. The new IoT applications are targeted as a key element in those factors. It will also include exercises and examples throughout the book, as well as their PLS solutions. This is the first textbook examining the current research to provide a unified view of wireless power transfer (WPT) and information transmission in WPCNs from a physical layer security (PLS) perspective. Focused on designing efficient secure transmission schemes, analyzing energy evolvement process, and evaluating secrecy outage performance under different channel state information (CSI), the results presented in this book shed light on how to best balance security and throughput with prudent use of harvested energy in WCNs. It also provides an overview of the WPCNs by introducing the background of WPT, followed by a summary of the research conducted in the field. The authors describe the physical-layer security (PLS) problem in WPCNs, including the causes and the impacts of the problem on the performance of WPCNs. The authors extend the discussions by introducing the applications of WPCNs in the IoT. From the Internet of Things (IoT) point of view, this textbook reviews the opportunities and challenges for the lately-emerged WPCN to seamlessly integrate into the IoT ecosystem. It specifically addresses the maximization problem of uplink and downlink sum-throughout in a dual-hop WPCN, while taking fairness among WPCN users as a constraint. The results provided in this book reveal valuable insights into improving the design and deployment of future WPCNs in the upcoming IoT environment. This textbook targets advanced-level students studying wireless communications and research engineers working in this field. Industry engineers in mobile device and network development business with an interest in WPCNs and IoT, as well as their PLS solutions, will also find this book useful.

Power Management For Wearable Electronic Devices written by Dima Kilani and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-17 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book describes power management integrated circuits (PMIC), for power converters and voltage regulators necessary for energy efficient and small form factor systems. The authors discuss state-of-the-art PMICs not only for battery powered wearable devices, but also energy harvesting-based devices. The circuits presented support voltage scaling to reduce the overall average power consumption of a wearable device, resulting in longer device operating time. The discussion includes many designs, control techniques and approaches to distribute efficiently the power among different blocks in the device. • Demonstrates for readers how to innovate in designing power management integrated circuits (PMIC) suitable for wearable devices, powered by either battery or harvesting energy; • Introduces a dual outputs switched capacitor, using a single voltage regulator to minimize the area overhead and discusses the effect of having more than two outputs on the area and power efficiency; • Introduces a novel clock-less digital LDO regulator that eliminates the use of the clocked comparator and serial shift register in the conventional design; • Presents experimental results of energy harvesting-based power management units (PMU), using different combinations of power converters and voltage regulators, providing a guide for designers to select the appropriate option based on device requirements.

Frequency Analysis of Vibration Energy Harvesting Systems aims to present unique frequency response methods for analyzing and improving vibration energy harvesting systems. Vibration energy is usually converted into heat energy, which is transferred to and wasted in the environment. If this vibration energy can be converted into useful electric energy, both the performance and energy efficiency of machines, vehicles, and structures will be improved, and new opportunities will open up for powering electronic devices. To make use of ambient vibration energy, an effective analysis and design method is established and developed in this book. The book covers a wide range of frequency response analysis methods and includes details of a variety of real-life applications. MATLAB programming is introduced in the first two chapters and used in selected methods throughout the book. Using the methods studied, readers will learn how to analyze and optimize the efficiency of vibration energy systems. This book will be ideal for postgraduate students and researchers in mechanical and energy engineering. Covers a variety of frequency response analysis methods, including Fourier and Laplace transform, transfer function, integration and state space for piezoelectric and electromagnetic vibration energy harvesting analysis Provides coverage of new and traditional methods of analyzing and optimizing the power and efficiency of vibration energy harvesting systems, with MATLAB exercises provided throughout Demonstrates a wide range of real-life applications, such as ocean wave energy conversion, vehicle suspension vibration energy harvesting, and more
