A contenda entre Florestan Fernandes e Guerreiro Ramos é um marco das ciências sociais no Brasil, foi um momento no qual dois sociólogos de peso expuseram suas ideias e ideais, trataram do assunto com grande acuidade e evitaram durante o debate lançar argumentos de sentido moral ou acusatório - embora Guerreiro Ramos seja mordaz em algumas colocações. Com o tempo, ficou claro que a disputa não envolvia apenas dois sociólogos em franca ascensão intelectual, nem dois schollars, mas distintas formas de institucionalização das ciências sociais (em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro), de socialização e formação intelectual - teórica, política e ideológica -, de conceber a sociologia e o papel do sociólogo, diferentes interpretações da sociedade brasileira, ‘visões de mundo’, projetos para as ciências sociais e, no limite, para o Brasil. Ambos os autores possuem uma produção teórica ampla – embora a obra de Florestan Fernandes seja mais vasta - e para abordá-las (e compará-las) cumpre identificar temas e argumentações que – com respeito às distinções objetivadas - perpassem significativamente as diferentes obras e acusem as prováveis variações de leme na trajetória dos autores, por mais sutis que por vezes pareçam; dentre outras possibilidades, elegemos questões como- a da recepção e assimilação das ideias ‘estrangeiras’ no Brasil, a concepção de ciência e sociologia como formas privilegiadas de saber na modernidade, o papel da sociologia (e dos sociólogos) na construção e rumos do país, a institucionalização do saber, o caráter e função da universidade brasileira, as formas e prioridades de investimento dos recursos em pesquisas, o ensino da sociologia como disciplina escolar e outras questões ‘menores’, cuja menção seria despropositada. Obviamente, todas estas questões estão permeadas por outras de relativo acento nos aspectos social, econômico e político derivadas do indissociável contexto.
