Il presente volume analizza una serie di tematiche centrali nelle vicende del nostro paese degli ultimi due secoli: l'unità nazionale, l'indipendenza, la libertà, la democrazia, il rapporto dell'Italia, una volta unificata, con altre nazioni europee fino al conseguimento di un'Europa federata se non confederata. Tutto questo dibattito, che si protrarrà anche dopo la formazione dell'unificazione nazionale, nasce e si sviluppa a partire dal 1796, in seguito cioè alla venuta in Italia di Napoleone Bonaparte e dell'esercito francese. È in quella fase, infatti, che gruppi di intellettuali e uomini politici cominciarono a prendere concretamente coscienza delle condizioni del nostro paese e gettarono le basi di quel processo che porterà alla formazione dell'Italia moderna. Nella prima parte del volume vengono presentate le posizioni, in certo qual modo emblematiche, espresse da figure quali Foscolo, Fantoni e L'Aurora. Nella seconda parte sono riproposte tematiche e programmi politici legati a personaggi quali Mazzini, Garibaldi e Cavour. Di Garibaldi, in particolare, si prendono in esame le proposte da lui elaborate nel periodo successivo all'unificazione nazionale, allorché si adoperò per la realizzazione di fondamentali diritti civili e sociali, presupposto per la costruzione di una reale democrazia in Italia.

Negli anni della Rivoluzione francese i giacobini in Francia furono all'avanguardia nel reclamare la libertà e l'uguaglianza, la giustizia sociale e la sovranità popolare. Un programma fatto proprio da moltissimi italiani, confluiti in un movimento unitario che entrò in scena nel Triennio repubblicano (1796-1799), animando la nascita dell'associazionismo e del giornalismo politici. Il principale obiettivo del movimento era l'unificazione dell'Italia in un unico Stato repubblicano, democratico e costituzionale. Era la prima generazione del Risorgimento che avviava la sua lunga lotta, nel crogiolo politico e ideologico che vide forgiarsi le correnti protagoniste dei due secoli seguenti: il liberalismo, la democrazia, il repubblicanesimo, il socialismo, il comunismo, l'anticolonialismo, il femminismo. Quel primo movimento politico italiano nascondeva al suo interno una società segreta, le Colonne della Democrazia, da cui sorse la misteriosa Società dei Raggi, la prima società segreta del Risorgimento sul cui tronco ne fiorirono altre, tra cui la più nota è la Carboneria. Il libro racconta la nascita del movimento che diede avvio al Risorgimento, perseguendo un programma politico avanzatissimo attuato solo in parte con l'Unità d'Italia e più compiutamente – ma non appieno – realizzato dopo la Resistenza al nazi-fascismo e la Costituente.

Mediterranean states are often thought to have 'democratised' only in the post-war era, as authoritarian regimes were successively overthrown. On its eastern and southern shores, the process is still contested. Re-imagining Democracy looks back to an earlier era, the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and argues it was this era when some modern version of 'democracy' in the region first began. By the 1860s, representative regimes had been established throughout southern Europe, and representation was also the subject of experiment and debate in Ottoman territories. Talk of democracy, its merits and limitations, accompanied much of this experimentation - though there was no agreement as to whether or how it could be given stable political form. Re-imagining Democracy assembles experts in the history of the Mediterranean, who have been exploring these themes collaboratively, to compare and contrast experiences in this region, so that they can be set alongside better-known debates and experiments in North Atlantic states. States in the region all experienced some form of subordination to northern 'great powers'. In this context, their inhabitants had to grapple with broader changes in ideas about state and society while struggling to achieve and maintain meaningful self-rule at the level of the polity, and self-respect at the level of culture. Innes and Philip highlight new research and ideas about a region whose experiences during the 'age of revolutions' are at best patchily known and understood, as well as to expand understanding of the complex and variegated history of democracy as an idea and set of practices.

Nazione, patria e identità sembrano essere i capisaldi dell’attuale destra italiana, portabandiera di un sovranismo protezionista che inneggia al ritorno a un’unità perduta, schiacciata dall’inesorabile avanzare di una globalizzazione fuori controllo. Lontana dal fervore risorgimentale, democratico e liberale, la propaganda odierna bandisce lo straniero, punta a chiudere le frontiere, canta le lodi del made in Italy in ogni settore. Incapace di tradurre il suo sedicente patriottismo in un progetto politico concreto, nel corso dei secoli la destra si è spesso abbandonata a nostalgici elogi della grandezza passata, disancorati da un disegno comunitario convincente. Sono queste le zone d’ombra messe in luce da Alessandro Campi nel ripercorrere gli approcci e gli snodi del cammino della destra (o meglio, delle destre) nel nostro paese dal primo Novecento a oggi. Attraverso le tappe fondamentali di una querelle che ha dato voce a risentimento e insoddisfazioni collettive, rileggendo teorie e movimenti l’autore si interroga, al di là di stereotipi e derive ideologiche, sul significato che il concetto di nazione può acquisire nello scenario futuro. Se finora nemmeno le forze politiche che rivendicavano la nazione come riferimento preminente sono riuscite a darle corpo e sostanza, la vera sfida è trasformarla in un «obiettivo realistico», in un «programma scientifico» che dia vita a una comunità al contempo particolare e plurale. Nel rispetto della «convivenza sociale», ma in difesa delle proprie specificità.
