Con ocasión del Premio Anagrama de Ensayo, que ha ganado por unanimidad con "Aires de familia", tenemos el honor de presentar al lector español a Carlos Monsiváis, uno de los grandes intelectuales latinoamericanos de nuestro tiempo y una conciencia crítica, lúcida e insobornable, en un ensayo ágil y sagaz, documentado y crítico, que se convertirá en una imprescindible obra de referencia. Han sido evidentes los «aires de familia» de las sociedades hispanoamericanas. En el patrimonio inicial participan el mismo idioma, con ajustes nacionales, la misma religión mayoritaria, con realidades espirituales marcadas por imágenes poderosas, la misma división entre liberales y conservadores o entre izquierda (fluctuante) y derecha (inamovible). A esto se añaden las formaciones de la historia, la literatura, la música, la norteamericanización, la explosión demográfica, las interminables ampliaciones urbanas, la desintegración rural. En las décadas recientes, a los «aires de familia» los afina y subraya la diversidad, que genera una nueva cultura latinoamericana caracterizada por la abundancia de opciones religiosas, el avance de la tolerancia, la democratización del ánimo social, la presencia creciente de la sociedad civil, la influencia de las tesis feministas, los movimientos y personas marginadas que se vuelven de algún modo centrales, etcétera. En veinte o treinta años América Latina es, en relación a su pasado, «la continuidad irreconocible», las semejanzas fragmentarias y las innovaciones profundas. Este ensayo es una aproximación a cambios y permanencias de la cultura latinoamericana en el siglo XX, en un panorama que va del culto a los héroes a la sociedad del espectáculo, de las migraciones culturales a la influencia de Hollywood en las sociedades en penumbras, del canon literario al idioma televisivo, de la fe devocional en la revolución a los proyectos democráticos. "Aires de familia" describe la unidad visible y profunda de naciones que comparten las sensaciones del abandono, las realidades de la desigualdad y, pese a todo, la fe en la democracia.
