Greatly anticipated and sorely needed, this book updates the successful guide to North American mosquitoes published by the American Mosquito Control Association in 1981. It includes 12 new species that have since been added to the North American mosquito fauna, revised distribution maps of all species, and revised and completely illustrated identification keys for the adult females and fourth instar larvae of all 174 species and subspecies known to occur in North America, north of Mexico. In chapters on adult and larval morphology, the coauthors--both world-renowned in their field of taxonomy--discuss the anatomical structures mentioned in the keys and pictured on full-page plates. They provide separate generic keys for adult females and larvae and keys to the species of each genus. In addition, they show the geographical distribution of each taxon in a series of maps and include a synopsis of the occurrence of species in the states and provinces of the United States and Canada. This book's usefulness to mosquito control programs cannot be overestimated. For example, it deals with 9 exotic species that have been introduced and today successfully thrive in North America. Several are increasing their range and this book will help identify these species when they first invade an area. Because of the occurrence of mosquito-borne diseases and the widespread distribution of mosquitoes as pests to humans, professionals must know how to identify them. With its wealth of up-to-date information, this book is the only one of its kind available for specialists working on mosquito-borne diseases and in mosquito control units and for both introductory and advanced students who study entomology.

There are now known from the same region 167 species and subspecies in 13 genera and 27 subgenera. The additions and changes in the names of the North American mosquito fauna have been reviewed by Carpenter (91,95,104) and Darsie (140,142). The principal objective of this volume purports to be the revision of the identification keys to adult female and larval stages which incorporate all 167 taxa. Each key is preceded by a detailed description of the morphology of that stage, which is needed to use the key successfully. In addition, each couplet of the two keys is illustrated to assist the user in interpreting the characters employed. A second purpose is to present up-to-date information on the geographical distribution of the mosquito taxa. We are continuing the arrangement used by Carpenter and LaCasse (106), listing the states and provinces from which each taxon has been reported with substantiating references. In addition, we are depicting the distribution on maps; actually the captions of the map plates (Plates 9-49) contain the specific states/provinces in which each taxon is found. Using Carpenter and LaCasse's monograph (106) as a starting point and listing the state/province data given by them, we are adding a total of 574 new state/province records which encompasses the 16 new species described since 1955. Detailed also are 37 instances in which species once reported as occuring in particular states/provinces are deleted.

It includes information on the ecology, medical and public health importance, and biological diversity of each species. In addition, it provides detailed identification keys for both larval and adult stages of all mosquito genera and species known to occur in Texas, along a review of surveillance and control strategies. The first and second editions of Medical and Veterinary Entomology, edited by Gary R. Mullen and Lance A. Durden, published in 2002 and 2009, respectively, have been highly praised and become widely used as a textbook for classroom instruction. This fully revised third edition continues the focus on the diversity of arthropods affecting human and animal health, with separate chapters devoted to each of the taxonomic groups of insects and arachnids of medical or veterinary concern, including spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks. Each chapter includes sections on taxonomy, morphology, life history, and behavior and ecology, with separate sections on those species of public-health and veterinary importance. Each concludes with approaches to management of pest species and prevention of arthropod-borne diseases. The third edition provides a comprehensive source for teaching medical and/or veterinary entomology at the college and university level, targeted particularly at upper-level undergraduate and graduate/postgraduate programs. In addition to its value as a student textbook, the volume has appeal to a much broader audience, specialists and non-specialists alike. It provides a key reference for biologists in general, entomologists, zoologists, parasitologists, physicians, public-health personnel, veterinarians, wildlife biologists, vector biologists, military entomologists, the general public and others seeking a readable, authoritative account on this important topic. Completely revised and updated edition Includes a distinguished group of 40 nationally and internationally recognized contributors Sixteen new authors, in addition to 25 continuing contributors from the first and second editions A new chapter on Arthropod Toxins and Venoms Illustrated with 560, mostly color, figures and updated maps depicting the distribution of important arthropod taxa and arthropod-borne diseases A significantly expanded and well-illustrated chapter on Molecular Tools Used in Medical and Veterinary Entomology Coverage of emerging and newly recognized arthropod concerns, including mosquito-borne Zika and Chikungunya viruses; tick-borne Bourbon and Heartland viruses; tick-borne rickettsioses and anaplasmosis; and red meat allergy associated with tick bites A 1700-word Glossary An Appendix of Arthropod-Related Viruses of Medical and Veterinary Importance

2013 BMA Medical Book Awards Winner As the importance of medical entomology increases, access to up-to-date, authoritative information also becomes increasingly critical. For nearly 20 years, the award-winning, bestselling Physician's Guide to Arthropods of Medical Importance has established itself as a standard reference in doctors' offices and emergency rooms. Now in its sixth edition, this book maintains its status as the ultimate easy-to-use guide for physicians and other health care providers, public health officials, and pest control professionals who need to identify arthropods, the common signs and symptoms of vector-borne diseases, and the recommended forms of treatment. The book begins by describing the pathologic conditions caused by arthropods and the principles of treating those conditions. It elucidates the rationale behind the various treatment regimes and the underlying principles of controlling the immune response. It covers identification of arthropods and common signs and symptoms of vector-borne disease. The book then provides an alphabetical arrangement of arthropods of medical importance with clearly marked subheadings for easy information access. The author concludes with personal protection methods against arthropods. Now with color pictures throughout, the Sixth Edition’s chapters have been updated with the latest information and current references. Older photographs and line drawings have been replaced with new and improved versions, and the interactive CD-ROM has also been updated with more pictures and videos as well as helpful identification aids, additional reading materials, and web links. This work is the most up-to-date reference on arthropods available. Jerome Goddard recently appeared on The Colbert Report.
