There can be few people in the early twenty-first century who have not, at some time, asked the question, "Who am I?" or set out to "find themselves." With creative insight and common sense, Dick Keyes offers a novel solution to the modern problem of identity that is found in the very creation of humanity itself. As human beings, we find our worth, value and meaning not in possessions, approval in others'eyes, or in the integration of our emotional life. We truly find ourselves only when we look "beyond identity" to a relationship with the God who made us. Dick Keyes and his wife Mardi, have worked with L'Abri Fellowship for over forty years in Switzerland, England and now in Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Westminster Theological Seminary. He is also the author of: Heroism, Chameleon Christianity, Seeing Through Cynicism

Beyond Identity Politics written by Moya Lloyd and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04-13 with Social Science categories.

Recent debates in contemporary feminist theory have been dominated by the relation between identity and politics. Beyond Identity Politics examines the implications of recent theorizing on difference, identity and subjectivity for theories of patriarchy and feminist politics. Organised around the three central themes of subjectivity, power and politics, this book focuses on a question which feminists struggled with and were divided by throughout the last decade, that is: how to theorize the relation between the subject and politics. In this thoughtful engagement with these debates Moya Lloyd argues that the turn to the subject in process does not entail the demise of feminist politics as many feminists have argued. She demonstrates how key ideas such as agency, power and domination take on a new shape as a consequence of this radical rethinking of the subject-politics relation and how the role of feminist political theory becomes centred upon critique. A resource for feminist theorists, women′s and gender studies students, as well as political and social theorists, this is a carefully composed and wide-ranging text, which provides important insights into one of contemporary feminism′s most central concerns.

Identity: Beyond Tradition and McWorld Neoliberalism refashions the frameworks of discussion of “who we are”. In the “Introduction”, co-editors Brian Michael Goss and Christopher Chávez’s grand tour re-works previous concepts of identity in prelude to the volume’s global reach. The first section examines the intersection of identity and mass media; to wit, non-ascriptive ideological interpolation in a right-wing British broadsheet, the rise of beur cinema as an organically European movement, and linguistic construction of foreigners in a Thai novel. The second section examines the nation and trans-nation. The discussion traverses the “Global Latino” in advertising discourse, the (practical, theoretical) conundrums inscribed in the European Union, retorts to the global construction of Italianicity, implications of Spain’s World Cup triumph in 2010 for the nation’s unity, and the activism of expatriate Iranian bloggers. The third section of the book addresses social approaches to identity. Matchmakers who coach Israeli daters and a linguistic analysis of female teen conflict on Facebook conclude the trajectory through global sites at which identity is animated in practice, within a volume of scholarly originality grounded in the present moment.

Recognition And The Human Life Form written by Heikki Ikäheimo and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-08 with Philosophy categories.

What is recognition and why is it so important? This book develops a synoptic conception of the significance of recognition in its many forms for human persons by means of a rational reconstruction and internal critique of classical and contemporary accounts. The book begins with a clarification of several fundamental questions concerning recognition. It then reconstructs the core ideas of Fichte, Hegel, Taylor, Fraser, and Honneth and utilizes the insights and conceptual tools developed across these chapters for developing a case for the universal importance of recognition for humans. It argues in favour of a universalist anthropological position, unusual in the literature on recognition, that aims to construe a philosophically sound basis for a discourse of common humanity, or of a shared human life-form for which moral relations of recognition are essential. This synthetic conception of the importance of recognition provides tools for articulating deep intuitions shared across cultures about what makes human life and forms of human co-existence better or worse, and thus tools for mutual understanding about the deepest shared concerns of humanity, or of what makes us all human persons despite our differences. Recognition and the Human Life-Form will appeal to readers interested in philosophical anthropology, social and political philosophy, critical theory, and the history of philosophy. It also provides ideas and conceptual tools for fields such as anthropology, education, disability studies, international relations, law, politics, religious studies, sociology, and social research. Chapter 5 of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com. It has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

This volume explores the cultural significance of Brexit, situating it in debates about nation and identity. Contributors to this collection seek to contextualize Britain's decision to leave the EU and to assess its reverberations in language, literature, and culture. Addressing such aspects as British exceptionalism, myth-making, medievalism, and nostalgia, contributions range from travelogues, Ladybird books, and rural cinema-going to ageing. An important focus lies on marginalized groups and geographical fringes, as contributors attend to the Irish situation and the scarcity of EU migrants in Brexit literature (BrexLit). Finally, two essays widen the perspective to assess American parallels to the discourses about a Brexit that is still far from "done."
