Identity Consciousness And Value written by Peter Unger and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-07-12 with Philosophy categories.
The topic of personal identity has prompted some of the liveliest and most interesting debates in recent philosophy. In a fascinating new contribution to the discussion, Peter Unger presents a psychologically aimed, but physically based, account of our identity over time. While supporting the account, he explains why many influential contemporary philosophers have underrated the importance of physical continuity to our survival, casting a new light on the work of Lewis, Nagel, Nozick, Parfit, Perry, Shoemaker, and others. Deriving from his discussion of our identity itself, Unger produces a novel but commonsensical theory of the relations between identity and some of our deepest concerns. In a conservative but flexible spirit, he explores the implications of his theory for questions of value and of the good life.

Making Values Explicit written by Sue Spaid and has been published by Ethics International Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-23 with Nature categories.
This book explores a wide range of topics to demonstrate how relevant values (rather than virtues, affects, emotions or beliefs) motivate people to act in ways that structure their identities, inspiring others to treat them as they see themselves (or want others to see them). The ‘Climate Change Crisis’ has brought several anomalies into focus. Clear and distinct information fails to alter people’s beliefs, and thus their actions don’t change. By contrast, visual art’s implicit ‘messages’ does tend to alter people’s beliefs over time. The very act of encountering novel values inspires people to shift beliefs to accommodate new values. All of this takes place in such a subtle manner that people may not realise their values have shifted until they act or react differently. This unusual and innovative book examines how people’s underlying values prompt their spontaneous reactions. These can range from attention to smell (pleasant and unpleasant); ideas regarding worth and value; notions of justice; desire to remediate degraded lands; appreciation of gifts; efforts to boost wellbeing; and strategies for mitigating climate change. In working through these issues, it will prompt readers to reflect upon how their values structure their personal identities, in terms of their daily activities and decisions, and provide the opportunity to evaluate how and whether their actions align with their values.

Encyclopedia Of Consciousness written by William P. Banks and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-26 with Psychology categories.
Consciousness has long been a subject of interest in philosophy and religion but only relatively recently has it become subject to scientific investigation. Now, more than ever before, we are beginning to understand this mental state. Developmental psychologists understand when we first develop a sense of self; neuropsychologists see which parts of the brain activate when we think about ourselves and which parts of the brain control that awareness. Cognitive scientists have mapped the circuitry that allows machines to have some form of self awareness, and neuroscientists investigate similar circuitry in the human brain. Research that once was separate inquiries in discreet disciplines is converging. List serves and small conferences focused on consciousness are proliferating. New journals have emerged in this field. A huge number of monographs and edited treatises have recently been published on consciousness, but there is no recognized entry point to the field, no comprehensive summary. This encyclopedia is that reference. Organized alphabetically by topic, coverage encompasses a summary of major research and scientific thought regarding the nature of consciousness, the neural circuitry involved, how the brain, body, and world interact, and our understanding of subjective states. The work includes contributions covering neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and artificial intelligence to provide a comprehensive backdrop to recent and ongoing investigations into the nature of conscious experience from a philosophical, psychological, and biological perspective.

This book offers a novel analysis of the widely-used but ill-understood technique of thought experiment. The author argues that the powers and limits of this methodology can be traced to the fact that when the contemplation of an imaginary scenario brings us to new knowledge, it does so by forcing us to make sense of exceptional cases.

The Bounds Of Agency written by Carol Rovane and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-26 with Philosophy categories.
The subject of personal identity is one of the most central and most contested and exciting in philosophy. Ever since Locke, psychological and bodily criteria have vied with one another in conflicting accounts of personal identity. Carol Rovane argues that, as things stand, the debate is unresolvable since both sides hold coherent positions that our common sense, she maintains, is conflicted; so any resolution to the debate is bound to be revisionary. She boldly offers such a revisionary theory of personal identity by first inquiring into the nature of persons. Rovane begins with a premise about the distinctive ethical nature of persons to which all substantive ethical doctrines, ranging from Kantian to egoist, can subscribe. From this starting point, she derives two startling metaphysical possibilities: there could be group persons composed of many human beings and muliple persons within a single human being. Her conclusions supports Locke's distinction between persons and human beings, but on altogether new grounds. These grounds lie in her radically normative analysis of the condition of personal identity, as the condition in which a certain normative commitment arises, namely, the commitment to achieve overall rational unity within a rational point of view. It is by virtue of this normative commitment that individual agents can engage one another specifically as persons, and possess the distinctive ethical status of persons. Carol Rovan is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. Originally published in 1997. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. The Privacy Of The Psychical written by Amihud Gilead and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-01 with Philosophy categories.
This book argues that the irreducible singularity of each person as a psychical subject implies the privacy of the psychical and that of experience, and yet the private accessibility of each person to his or her mind is compatible with interpersonal communication and understanding. The book treats these major issues against the background of the author’s original metaphysics—panenmentalism.

This collection cuts across conventional disciplinary boundaries to address the roles, responsibilities, and regulation of contemporary lawyers. Contributors address common concerns from diverse perspectives, including philosophy, psychology, economics, political science, and organizational behavior. Topics include the nature of professions, the structure of practice, the constraints of an adversarial system, the attorney-client relationship, the practical value of moral theory, the role of race and gender, and the public service responsibilities of lawyers and law students. Unique in both its breadth and its depth, this book redefines debates that are of enduring significance for both the profession and the public.

Diversity Ideologies In Organizations written by Kecia M. Thomas and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-10 with Business & Economics categories.
Since the increased attention toward diversity in the workplace, the concepts of "diversity initiatives" and "diversity management" have become a common place in many conversations among academics and practitioners alike. The diversity movement in the workplace originated from the increased avocation for equal treatment of minority groups due to the dynamic composition of the modern workforce. Many organizations were forced to face these changes and the dilemma of how to respond to group differences to maintain and/or increase organization effectiveness and productivity. This volume will present new research on the colorblindness versus multiculturalism debate, assist in broadening the diversity ideology conversation, share this conversation across social science domains including industrial/organizational psychology, social psychology, and law and public policy, and highlight how the nature of diversity ideology may be fluid and therefore be different depending on the diversity dimension discussed.
