In 1949 a powerful political-military movement, led by the Chinese Communist party, gained control of war-ravaged China, inheriting a disorganized administration and a society eroded by decades of revolution. Within a short time China was so radically transformed politically, economically, and socially that it appeared to have cut all links with the past. The instruments of that transformation were ideology and organization. Today, seventeen years later, the ideology and the organizational network, despite changes, remain as powerful as they were in 1949. They still hold that vast country together politically and determine its economic and social development. This book, after a discussion of ideology in its first part, attempts to answer the question how Chinese Communist organization functions and why it is so successful. The second part analyzes the organization of Party and government, emphasizing methods of command and administration. The third part looks at industrial organization: the problems of management and control, especially the continuing struggle between the professionals and the politicians. The fourth part investigates the Chinese Communist methods of organizing their cities and villages, tracing the history of village organization from traditional times through the Yenan period, the land reform of the late 1940's, and the collectivization of the mid-1950's to communization in 1958. Although organization has been constantly changing in China, basic patterns ar apparent. The book analyzes the most characteristic pattern in all aspects of organization, the conflict between two incompatible elements or, in the Chinese Communist terms, "contradictions." The basic contradiction is that between professional ("expert") and political ("red") elements. This contradiction dominates the two distinctive periods in the short history of Communist China, the First Five-Year Plan (1953 - 1957) and the so-called Great Leap Forward (1958 - 1960). The book describes how the Chinese Communists attempted during the former period to emulate the Soviet organizational experience, with stress on techniques and technology; and during the latter period to use their own organizational methods to achieve economic progress. The presentation of the contrast between these two models of organization sheds light on the significant differences between the Soviet Union and Communist China. This book integrates the history of China's socialist ideology and socialist movement with the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and that of modern China. It attempts to inform the reader with an objective narration of major historical events, a vivid depiction of great personalities, and the concise and insightful comments of the author, Dr. Yu Youjun. Socialism in China (1919-1965) covers the period spanning from the May 4th Movement of 1919 to the eve of the Cultural Revolution in 1965. Providing a broad historical perspective and sharp insights, it describes this period in detail, from the introduction of Marxism to China to the CPC integrating the theory with China's prevailing conditions and enriching it with Chinese characteristics, to the evolution and practice of scientific socialism in China. The Chinese Communists, represented by Mao Zedong, integrated the fundamental tenets of Marxism with China's prevailing conditions and revolutionary practices to create their own New Democracy Theory that included both new democratic revolution and new democratic society and to establish the People's Republic of China. The author's systematic review and thinking of their explorations of a theory and path to build socialism in a country that was semi-colonial and semi-feudal, burdened with a backward economy and culture, and his objective summary of the lessons and experiences from their explorations, all act as a mirror for today's governance and education.

Economic Transition And Political Legitimacy In Post Mao China written by Feng Chen and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-01-01 with Business & Economics categories.

Tracing the role of ideas in Chinese economic reform from 1978 to the present, this book explores the conversion of China's policymakers to capitalist economic thinking. Chen argues that the reform process has created a gap between the legitimacy of the leadership, which remains rooted in Marxist-Leninist ideology, and the practice of reform, which has abandoned such ideological constraints. Through a systematic survey of party documents and resolutions, official publications, leaders' speeches, academic journals, and newspapers, Chen shows how Chinese policymakers reconceptualized the ownership system and adjusted related policies. Focusing on a number of economic policy issue areas such as state economy, rural reform, privatization, and income distribution, he analyzes in depth the implications of this gap for the current Chinese leadership and the future of China's political development.

This book is a reference book for students learning Mao Zedong Thought in universities and colleges in China and for theoreticians and researchers studying it in Party schools, theoretical publicity bodies and academic research institutes from Mainland China. It offers an objective, equitable, and comprehensive introduction and assessments on the past and latest achievements in the study of Mao Zedong Thought in China and foreign countries and on the controversial issues in the study. When deciding on the English edition of this book, we have aimed to deliver the global reader a complete picture on how Mao Zedong and Mao Zedong's ideology is evaluated and studied in today's China. It is a representative book of its kind and also reflects how the mainland Chinese scholars have evaluated foreign studies on Mao Zedong. Thus we hope the book will encourage more exchanges on Mao Zedong studies worldwide. The book also offers a comprehensive and systematic study material and factual information for those interested in the history of Marxism in China. The book was written by a team work and young and middle-aged scholars teaching and studying Mao Zedong Thought and the history of the Communist Party of China at the Department of History of the Communist Party of China in Renmin University of China, have contributed to it. Mao Zedong one of the most charismatic Marxist political leaders of the world, has affected the path of China, region and the world. As a large country with an unimaginable population China had been an important object of world politics, then it became a subject acting for itself this was mainly initiated by two persons and two parties, Sun-Yat-Sen and KMT; Mao and CPC. But, Sun-Yat-Sen was an unfortunate man, he could not see his ideals being realized for his people and country and the party he had established -KMT remains as one of the capitalist ruling parties in Taiwan Island. Mao Zedong could also not see all what he desired. The Cultural Revolution had proceeded in a totally different direction. Some of his ideals would not fit the practice of today's Chinese socialism. Yang Fengcheng, the compiler of this comprehensive book offers enough evidence that studies in China over Mao Zedong himself and his ideology has remarkably improved and being institutionalized after that evaluation and in 1990s. Yang Fengcheng and his colleagues have presented a large catalogue of new research findings and debates among scholars and experts studying in this sphere. These abundant and thought provoking materials surely offer a broad vision for a wide range of related people including scholars, politicians and activists. It will be impossible to understand today's and future China without understanding Mao Zedong and the CPC. Mao Zedong had made the deepest effect in China's life and readers may find solid evidence that this will be valid for a long time to come. Mao Zedong, was the first man who had seen the major future trend of socialist movement in the world, that it should be firmly rooted in a country's soil and integrated with the people's practice in that country. But this new idea in a certain period of time in the history had caused a big turbulence and sharp conflicts in the socialist movement and was of a great political significance. Being a part of the conflict hurts every side and confuses people and sometimes conflicts become unavoidable. The book also offers some material how this issue was later evaluated and reviewed and set in the right direction by the CPC. Study of main trends, ideas and leaders are important component of country studies. As the root ideology of China's Marxism, which leads the country, the new trends in Mao Zedong Thought studies will remain to be important. This book offers a rare opportunity, as it is the first English published book by authoritative Chinese authors on this subject with the newest information.
