This book brilliantly illuminates part of our prehistoric heritage that has for long been shrouded in darkness and mystery. Built over 5000 years ago, the megalithic monuments of Ireland with their spectacular art have baffled scientists for generations. Now, through patient and extensive fieldwork, Mr. Brennan sets that ancient tradition in the astronomical and ritual context for which it was intended. What the author and his colleagues discovered was that most if not all the major Irish mounds are oriented to the rising and setting positions of the sun at critical times of the year-- solstice, cross-quarter day, equinox. Even more remarkably they found that the beams of light projected into the inner chambers at these times illuminate one after another the images carved on the stones, as if spelling out messages in an archaic code. Analysis of the carvings revealed an ancient preoccupation with solar and lunar symbolism, and true sundials and calendar stones are seen to exist here earlier than anywhere else in the world. In his text and own superb two-color drawings Martin Brennan fully documents these discoveries, as well as describing the researches of others and echoes from the distant past to be found in Gaelic literature. All the major Irish engraved compositions are illustrated, providing not only support for the author's theories but also a wonderful treasury of Irish megalithic art. With 300 illustrations in one and two colors.

My interest in the history of the Struve family is long-standing but lay dormant until 1972, when I found myself organizing a symposium of the International Astronomical Union in memory of the second Otto Struve. To satisfy my own curiosity, I investigated the precise relationships of the famous astronomers in the family and published an account of them, based mainly on secondary sources. The exercise made me a ware that there was no biography in English of the first and probably still the greatest astronomer in the clan - Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve. Wilhelm's son, the first Otto, wrote an account (in German) of his father's life, intended primarily for family and close friends and --though printed-- not generally available. Through the kindness of a family member I have a copy from which I have been able to work. The Soviet historian of science, Z. K. Sokolovskaya, wrote a biography in Russian, in 1964, to mark the centenary of Wilhelm's death. This had a limited edition, and my efforts to obtain a copy failed. Neither work has, in its entirety, been translated into English, although Michael Meo of Oakland, California, and Kevin Krisciunas of Hilo, Hawaii, have kindly made available to me their unpublished translations of some sections of the latter. In the of a complete copy, however, when I decided to attempt an English absence language biography, I thought it best to do so independently of Sokolovskaya's.

I was introduced to Tiisi: and his Tadhkira some 19 years ago. That first meeting was neither happy nor auspicious. My graduate student notes from the time indicate a certain level of confusion and frustration; I seem to have had trouble with such words as tadwlr (epicycle), which was not to be found in my standard dictionary, and with the concept of solid-sphere astronomy, which, when found, was pooh-poohed in the standard sources. I had another, even more decisive reaction: boredom. Only the end of the term brought relief, and I was grateful to be on to other, more exciting aspects of the history of science. A few years later, I found myself, thanks to fellowships from Fulbright-Hays and the American Research Center in Egypt, happily immersed in the manu script collections of Damascus, Aleppo, and Cairo. Though I had intended to work on a topic in the history of mathematics, I was drawn, perhaps inevitably, to a certain type of astronomical writing falling under the rubric of hay' a. At first this fascination was based on sheer numbers; that so many medieval scientists could have written on such a subject must mean something, I told myself. (I was in a sociological mode at the time.

From the Preface to the Third Edition. The sale of 3000 copies of this book in little more than a year, many of them to persons of more education than I originally contemplated, has induced me to enlarge it considerably, going rather deeper into the subject, and adding some explanations which I did not venture on before. The additions chiefly relate to meteors, nebulae, and stars, the moon's acceleration and other disturbances, the tides, and the calculations for Easter in all ages; and a fuller account of the methods of weighing the sun, moon, and planets. The chapter on telescopes also has been greatly enlarged; for astronomy lives by them, and I do not know where a popular explanation of the theory of telescopes is to be found. I keep to the plan of using as few 'diagrams,' and as few words, as will serve the purpose, because I am satisfied that such explanations are both easier to read and to remember - provided of course they are explanations (see p. 100 n). A book is not a lecture. There it may be prudent to say things several times over, in different ways, and to illustrate them as well as you can ; for the hearers must not stop to think, or they will be left behind. I have not scrupled to draw figures wherever I thought they would be useful. \ repeat the warning of the former editions, that this book only aims at making astronomy as easy as it can be made if difficulties and the reasons of things are really to be explained, and not evaded in vague language which leaves people as ignorant as before. It is idle to suppose that anything can be learnt of astronomy as a science of causes and effects, without some study and power of thought, and some natural capacity for geometrical conceptions. But those who cannot always follow the reasoning may still read the results, treating the book as one of 'descriptive astronomy' only, though it is really an introduction to 'physical astronomy,' or the astronomy of causes and effects. Though no mathematical knowledge is required of the reader, I do not profess anything so absurd as to rebuild the Newtonian system without mathematics. We soon come to a point in explanation where we must either stop and disclose no more, or else bridge over the chasm by adopting some simple result, or perhaps rather difficult calculation; such for instance as these two : that a sphere, but not a spheroid, attracts as if it were all condensed into its centre; and that the time of performing an elliptic orbit is the same as of the circle which contains it. All the arithmetical calculations here are founded on propositions as simple as these ; and yet these require geometry, algebra, trigonometry, conic sections, and differential and integral calculus (or else other obsolete contrivances) to prove, though not to use them. I have taken no small pains to avoid mistakes, but I cannot expect to have entirely succeeded; for even great astronomers occasionally commit them, from haste of writing or imperfect recollection; and sometimes they have to recant absolute mistakes of reasoning. I do not pretend to be an astronomer at all; but having been pressed into this service by a kind of accident, I have done the best I could for it.

Excerpt from Recent Advances in Astronomy In the following pages I have endeavoured to give a simple account of some of the more interesting Recent Advances in Astronomy. To harmonize with the general scheme of the series of which this work forms a volume, it was at first suggested that I should develop recent progress in Astronomy historically. The difficulties in the way of treating any branch of science in such a manner are, however, very considerable; especially when, as in the present instance, it is desired to present the subject in such a manner as to be readily followed by those who have but slight familiarity with its technicalities. I am only acquainted with one entirely satisfactory "History of Astronomy," and that one scarcely appeals to other than professional astronomers. It has upon the whole appeared best to effect a compromise between an historical and a purely descriptive method; and I have, therefore, while dealing with what have appeared to me to be a few among the more interesting problems of modern Astronomy in a series of separate essays, followed in each the historical method as far as possible. It has been found practicable to adhere to this scheme more rigidly in the latter part of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elements of Astronomy: Accompanied With Numerous Illustrations, a Colored Representation of the Solar, Stellar, and Nebular Spectra, and Celestial Charts of the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere These "Elementary Lessons in Astronomy" are intended, in the main, to serve as a text-book for use in Schools, but I believe they will be found useful to "children of a larger growth," who wish to make themselves acquainted with the basis and teachings of one of the most fascinating of the Sciences. The arrangement adopted is new; but it is the result of much thought. I have been especially anxious in the descriptive portion to show the Sun's real place in the Cosmos, and to separate the real from the apparent movements. I have therefore begun with the Stars, and have dealt with the apparent movements in a separate chapter. It maybe urged that this treatment is objectionable, as it reduces the mental gymnastic to a minimum; it is right, therefore, that I should state that my aim throughout the book has been to give a connected view of the whole subject rather than to discuss any particular parts of it; and to supply facts, and ideas founded on the facts, to serve as a basis for subsequent study and discussion. A companion volume to the present one - I allude to the altogether admirable "Popular Astronomy" from the pen of the Astronomer Royal -may, from this point of view, be looked upon as a sequel to two or three chanters in this book.
