Italian writer and political activist Ignazio Silone spent fifteen years from 1929 to 1944 as a political exile in Switzerland. Focusing on this period, this book throws new light on Silone's complex biography and shows how his literary production influenced and was influenced by fellow antifascist German émigrés and the Swiss socialist intelligentsia. Using previously unknown archival materials, letters, and diaries, and following a flexible chronological structure, the book examines the developing role Silone played in the intellectual life of Zurich. Its analysis of Silone's links with 'Bauhaus' circles, disciples of C.J. Jung, and Zurich's socialist city council offers an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective on Silone's exile that both questions and celebrates his status as an 'un-Italian' Italian author. Holmes also considers wider topics such as the functions of the engagé writer in times of crisis, the dynamics of cultural transfer through translation, and the phenomenon of exile literature. Italian antifascist exile writing is an area of Italian literature that has never been explored as an entity. With its painstaking archival research and critical approach to the pioneering methods and results of German 'Exilforschung,' Ignazio Silone in Exile opens the way for further studies on this little known aspect of Italian emigration culture.

A founding member of the Italian Communist Party, Silone took up writing only after being expelled from the PCI and garnered immediate success with his first book, Fontamara, the most influential and widely translated work of antifascism in the 1930s. Prefazione di Francesco De Core La scelta dei compagni come risposta al nichilismo di massa, la chiamata all’azione secondo Ignazio Silone Abruzzese, sopravvissuto al terremoto del 1915, Silone fu accolto a Roma da don Orione, e conobbe molti militanti socialisti diventando, nel 1921, uno dei fondatori del Partito comunista italiano. Dal comunismo si staccò nel 1930, avendone visto e combattuto la deriva autoritaria quand’era esule in Svizzera, dove pubblicò in quell’anno con il nome che si era scelto nella clandestinità il romanzo Fontamara, che narrava le condizioni di vita dei suoi contadini e la loro sete di riscatto, un romanzo amato da lettori di mezzo mondo. In Uscita di sicurezza (1965) denunciò il tradimento sovietico e lo stalinismo. In La scelta dei compagni (1954) affronta il “nichilismo di massa”, l’accettazione del mondo così come viene, senza pensare a dove ci sta portando.

Luce d’Eramo entra in contatto con Ignazio Silone nell’estate del 1965, dando inizio a un’amicizia che il tempo renderà profonda e che s’interromperà soltanto con la morte dello scrittore nel 1978. Questo libro raccoglie gli scritti che la d’Eramo ha dedicato a Silone nel corso degli anni, un lavoro che non è soltanto una perfetta guida alla lettura, ma anche la testimonianza unica di una simbiosi letteraria e il prodotto di un’attitudine critica fondata sull’indissolubilità di scrittura e impegno, esistenza e stile. Il corpo principale è costituito dal monumentale saggio che Luce d’Eramo pubblicò, dopo una lunga lavorazione, nel 1971: L’opera di Ignazio Silone. Saggio critico e guida bibliografica. Minuziosa ricostruzione della fortuna critica di Silone, il volume rispondeva anche alla necessità di ristabilire la statura di un autore che era già un classico fuori dai confini italiani, mentre in patria subiva ancora le conseguenze della propria non conformità politica ed estetica. Il saggio è anche una singolare avventura metodologica, dove la d’Eramo vuole «fornire al lettore tutti gli elementi affinché possa formarsi un giudizio proprio», e ricostruisce il percorso dello scrittore abruzzese attraverso l’esame di un’enorme quantità di documenti. Qui, e con crescente chiarezza negli interventi e negli articoli successivi, vengono rovesciati ambiguità e pregiudizi critici sul linguaggio di Silone, mentre la «conversione» cristiana è considerata come il naturale proseguimento della battaglia ideale iniziata nel partito comunista. Il carteggio inedito tra i due scrittori mostra infine, per frammenti e bagliori, la densità di un rapporto umano e intellettuale che si offre oggi allo studio e all’attenzione dei lettori.
