Joseph Sandre (1850-1926) appartient à une famille d’instituteurs que Mona Ozouf a mis en lumière en publiant leurs cahiers et souvenirs. Joseph, qui a fait toute sa carrière en Brionnais-Charolais, a laissé des monographies des villages où il a exercé (Montceaux-l’Étoile, Saint-Julien-de-Civry, Ormes et Vérizet). Il n’a jamais enseigné à Iguerande, mais y a vécu une partie de son enfance et il a laissé une importante documentation, qu’il envisageait peut-être d’utiliser pour faire une monographie de cette commune. La partie, semble-t-il, la plus achevée est celle concernant la langue et les coutumes. Elle forme un cahier de près de 150 pages, terminé en août 1920, qui comprend un glossaire du patois d’Iguerande et décrit les coutumes de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle. Ce patient travail d’ethnologue est précieux pour « éclairer l’histoire des peuples, [et] fixer leur vie propre dans le passé ». Les Iguerandais d’aujourd’hui y verront comment vivaient leurs ancêtres, leurs mœurs, leurs habitations, leurs travaux et leurs distractions. Claude Michel, dialectologue à l’Institut Pierre Gardette (UCLy) est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages concernant les patois, le français régional et la toponymie de la zone francoprovençale, particulièrement du Roannais et du Beaujolais.
