From notions of art for art’s sake to committed poetry, it may seem that poets cannot achieve reconciliation between the politics and poetry. However, among committed Communist poets of the 20th century of the Spanish-speaking world, three poets stand out as examples of a search to bring together their political and their poetic commitments: Rafael Alberti, Nicolás Guillén, and Pablo Neruda. Political Poetry in the Wake of the Second Spanish Republic analyzes the simultaneous development of politics and poetics in these three Spanish-language poets as it was nurtured by the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939). Beginning in these years, Alberti, Guillén, and Neruda strove to tackle the challenge of committing to their own independent poetic projects and to their politics at the same time. Later, these three poets maintained their Communist Party affiliation until their deaths and produced collection after collection of quality poetry. Despite the differences in their overall poetic trajectories and projects, the ability to maneuver between politics and poetry without sacrificing either one is common among them. Because of their unique experiences during the time of the Second Spanish Republic in Spain, each author explicitly denounced the injustices that the opposing Franquist forces had committed against the Republic. After the fall of the Republic in 1939, Alberti, Guillén, and Neruda continued to intertwine their politics with their poems only in a less obvious manner. Therefore, each could solidify his position within the poetic canon while at the same time each could maintain his position as a committed (or at least card-carrying) Communist.

La justicia ha tardado, pero, al fin, se ha hecho sólida con la obra de Vicente Huidobro. Hoy en día, se presenta una revitalización de los estudios en torno a sus libros de poemas y manifiestos, esencialmente a partir de las investigaciones del profesor norteamericano René de Costa y del chileno Cedomil Goic, la existencia de la Fundación Vicente Huidobro con su sede en Santiago de Chile, la Casa-Museo de Cartagena (un ejemplo de correctísima museología) y la crítica, tanto española como hispanoamericana, académica y periodística (que permanecieran muchos años al margen de las necesarias consideraciones que su poesía y su figura merecían) año tras año han ido engrosando la bibliografía en torno a este autor con ediciones críticas, facsimilares, con dosieres en revistas, artículos, notas, reseñas, etcétera. Antaño y tal vez, porque las absurdas polémicas oscurecieron con frecuencia otras posibles lecturas o porque esa misma crítica se había polarizado injustamente (Huidobro-Neruda; Huidobro-De Rokha; Huidobro-Reverdy; etcétera) hasta llegar al extremo de rechazar de plano rendir un mínimo tributo o reconocimiento a la obra y a la conflictiva y profunda personalidad del poeta y escritor vanguardista chileno. De tal forma que su escritura fue olvidada y postergada salvo en el caso de los poetas –y menciono a Octavio Paz o Jorge Teillier, por ejemplo– quienes supieron dar con la estatura de Huidobro y con la trascendencia irrefutable para la literatura hispanoamericana y, en general, en lengua castellana.

REPÚBLICA LITERARIA Y REVOLUCIÓN (1920-1939) quiere ser un ensayo de interpretación de un proceso cultural que trata de reconstruir el hilo rojo de la literatura española durante los años veinte y treinta. Un hilo rojo que tuvo a la intelectualidad comunista como vanguardia que trató de hacer compatibles literatura y política. Pero una vanguardia que comprendía no sólo a los intelectuales militantes sino también a los «compañeros de viaje», que colaboraron juntos, en oposición al fascismo ascendente, en la construcción del Frente Popular de la cultura española. Libros, editoriales, periódicos y revistas alimentaron a un público formado mayoritariamente por lectores de la burguesía y pequeña burguesía republicana, liberal y progresista, pero también por una minoría de la clase obrera (anarquistas, comunistas, socialistas, trotskistas), por una vanguardia política que sentía hambre y sed de cultura y de literatura revolucionarias. Reconstruir una vanguardia cuesta acaso dos o tres generaciones y en 1939 nuestra vanguardia intelectual y política, «cautiva y desarmada», tuvo que exiliarse, fue fusilada o condenada al insilio como precio impuesto por la Victoria de una dictadura militar franquista.

Con revisiones dirigidas principalmente a remitir de unos a otros y a evitar en lo posible las repeticiones innecesarias, se recogen en este volumen algunos trabajos de Blanco Aguinaga, que fueron escritos en su mayoría durante la década de 1990. El libro abarca cronológicamente desde Galdós –al que le dedica un ensayo sobre las novelas que escribió en mitad del apogeo de la Restauración de los Borbones–, hasta la narrativa de la Transición (que, de hecho, es una segunda Restauración borbónica). El recorrido por tanto es largo (cien años, prácticamente exactos), pero no es éste un libro que pretenda hacer la historia literaria de todos esos años. Se trata, más bien, de lo que Dámaso Alonso llamaría «calas»: exploración de las obras de ciertos autores en momentos especialmente importantes de la historia (literaria y social) española contemporánea. «Calas» diversas que aparecen relacionadas no sólo por una unidad temática insistente, sino por la sostenida perspectiva historicista e ideológica de Blanco Aguinaga.
