Tracing the contours of Picasso's evolving dialogue with the master of phantasmagorical figuration In his youth, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) frequented the Prado Museum, rejecting a formal education in favor of studying the works of the old masters himself. El Greco (1541-1614) particularly captivated his attention, and his admiration soon bloomed into inspiration. Signature features of El Greco's style were regenerated by Picasso's reverent, if also subversive, hand. During his Blue Period (1901-04), the artist incorporated El Greco's penchant for elongated figures, sober backgrounds and a touch of mysticism and mannerism; during his late career, he more explicitly embraced his fascination with the Spanish Golden Age, evoking El Greco's palette of warm browns and ochers. Indeed, Picasso helped spearhead a resurgence of interest in El Greco, whose work--while acclaimed by his contemporaries in the 16th century for its undeniable ingenuity--was largely forgotten following his death, until the early 1900s. By engaging in a dialogue with his predecessor, Picasso established a point of historical continuity in his work--a grounding presence in the midst of his radical formal interventions. This volume juxtaposes 40 masterpieces by the artists, underscoring the depth and longevity of this engagement.

Camille Pissarro written by Christophe Duvivier and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-25 with Art categories.

This new consideration of Pissarro’s work focuses on his strengths as a unifier and champion of other painters, as well as his innovative approach to the Impressionist movement and beyond. As one of the founding figures of Impressionism, Camille Pissarro exerted considerable influence over the movement’s other members, such as Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, and Mary Cassatt. This publication focuses on Pissarro’s collaborations with these and other artists. It also celebrates the avant-garde quality of his painting, particularly in his contributions to Neo-Impressionism. Focusing on his role in the revolutionary Impressionist movement of the 1870s, the book traces Pissarro’s work in dialog with his fellow artists, particularly Cezanne and Gauguin, and also reveals his influence on works by Alfred Sisley, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and others. In addition to pages of exquisite reproductions of works by Pissarro and his contemporaries, this volume features illuminating essays about his influences on Van Gogh, his approach to the female figure, and the role of synthesis among the early Impressionists. Readers will come away with a new understanding of how Pissarro’s unique talent for collaboration and unity was vital to the development of French painting in the late 19th century.

The Figurative Pollock written by Nina Zimmer and has been published by Prestel Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Figurative art, American categories.

This beautiful book focuses on the distinctive and expressive power of Jackson Pollock's figurative paintings, drawings, and prints; a rarely studied aspect of his artistic career. Jackson Pollock's name has become synonymous with the abstract drip paintings that he famously created on the floor of his studio. Before these paintings, from the 1930s to the late 1940s, Pollock created figurative works, studying at one time under the painter Thomas Hart Benton and with the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Pollock took up figuration again after his famous drip paintings. This book starts with the early decades and also treats Pollock's re-adoption of the figuration after his renowned abstract paintings. The Figurative Pollock features 100 paintings and works on paper. From rolling landscapes to experiments in non-Western totemic painting to sketches and drawings fueled by Jungian analysis, the enormous range of Pollock's early and late work is presented here. Brimming with confidence and a sense of freedom, distinct yet so easily related to Pollock's most famous oeuvre, these works contribute to an understanding of how the artist found his voice.

This monograph on the work of abstract painter and sculptor Otto Freundlich looks at the entirety of the artist's career. A German painter and sculptor of Jewish origin, Otto Freundlich was widely known in the art circles of his day. He was on close terms with the leading artists of Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Orphism, Dada, Suprematism, De Stijl, Bauhaus, Constructivism, the Cologne Progressives, and ultimately with the abstractionists. While his work was influenced by artists of these movements, Freundlich created a unique body of work in his paintings, sculptures, mosaics, and stained glass. This stunningly illustrated book follows the arc of Otto Freundlich's life and work, and explores the development of his artistic and philosophical ideas.

Leiko Ikemura written by Anita Haldemann and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-10 with Art categories.

Featuring more than four decades of Leiko Ikemura's work in nearly every medium, this book presents an artist who fuses together Eastern and Western cultures. Luminous, large-scale paintings, fantastical, chimerical sculpture, girlish warriors, and Amazon goddesses--Leiko Ikemura's artistic output is as diverse as it is prolific. In this book that gathers together drawings, monotypes, paintings, and sculpture, Ikemura's unique talent for fusing Eastern and Western art is profoundly evident. In her work, Ikemura explores themes of hybridity, cross-culturalism, sexuality, and death. She works at the intersection of abstraction and figuration, shifting fluidly between media, and imbuing her pieces with raw energy and emotion. Ikemura's exotic landscapes emerge from tempera-like washes. Her terra-cotta and bronze sculpture is both feminine and timeless and her unique pictorial language manifests itself in landscapes and figures that summon a sense of loss. Whether she's celebrating the power of the female form or exploring a misty dreamscape, Ikemura achieves a unique synthesis of cultures, traditions, and perceptions in everything she creates.

ELEMENTE DER ENERGIE UND KOMPLEXITÄT Fiona Rae (geb.
