Non basta certo un libro per raccontare una vita; tre però possono tentare l’impossibile impresa e se si è davvero scrittori di talento, offrire al mondo un gigantesco e magnificente affresco e fare della sua lettura un’esperienza immersiva. Il barone di Palagonia è un’opera straordinaria al centro della quale sta il protagonista, Francesco, un bambino desideroso di studiare ma che diventa adulto lontano dai banchi di scuola, precocemente strappato alle cure materne per lavorare nel Feudo dei Palagonia e assistere al giovane baronello, Giovanni, cui lo legherà un’amicizia profondissima. I due crescono insieme, inseparabili, finché un giorno qualcosa si spezza. Scoppia la Grande Guerra, Francesco è chiamato al fronte. Sono anni bui, di morte e di coraggio, che riconsegnano alla nativa Sicilia un uomo fatto, forgiato dal dolore ma ancora pieno di passione. Inizia qui il riscatto di Francesco, la costruzione di una famiglia, l’ascesa sociale, il coronamento dell’ultimo – o forse il primo – vero amore. Francesco, uomo artefice del proprio destino, è incarnazione di una ricchezza d’animo che prescinde dal titolo nobiliare o dalle stellette militari, connubio tra l’aderenza alle tradizioni e la frattura, la trasgressione, uomo siciliano e insieme di mondo, legato al suo tempo ma proiettato al futuro, mai dimentico del passato ma desideroso sempre di guardare avanti, forte di una speranza e fiducia nella vita che nulla può spegnere. Giuseppe Saglimbeni è nato ad Augusta (SR) il 2 luglio 1972, sposato con due figli. Dopo la maturità scientifica si iscrive alla facoltà di Giurisprudenza di Catania, interrotta dopo un paio di anni per alcune esperienze missionarie. Dopo il servizio militare svolto nella base aerea di Aviano (PN), inizia a lavorare ad Augusta come responsabile qualità e addetto all’ufficio di un consorzio di imprese edili. Nel 2001 si trasferisce in Friuli, precisamente a Pordenone, dato che la futura moglie, conosciuta durante il servizio militare, vive lì. Inizia a lavorare come operaio, poi diventa impiegato tecnico e subito dopo responsabile di produzione. Per otto anni co-amministratore di un’azienda, è attualmente impiegato tecnico-commerciale in una vetreria.

The Grand Hôtel et des Palmes is an icon of Palermo life. Its rooms and public spaces have witnessed the events that have shaped twentieth century Sicily: everything from the suicide of a poet to political intrigues and a clandestine mafia meeting. This hotel has a long and venerable history. It started out as a private residence for the Ingham-Whitakers, the Anglo-Sicilian family of marsala wine fame, before being sold to the hotelier Enrico Ragusa in 1874. Wagner was one of the most eminent early guests, looking for inspiration to finish his last opera, Parsifal. A few days after its completion, a nervous Renoir arrived to paint his portrait. Months later came Guy de Maupassant, who asked to see Wagner's former suite so that he might detect 'a little of his personality'. The novelist and poet, Raymond Roussel, arrived in the 1930s, but was destined to leave in a coffin. Arthur Miller, Sophia Loren and Maria Callas were all guests and when Visconti was filming The Leopard in Sicily, the entire cast – notably Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon – visited the hotel. Lancaster even dined with a Baron who had made the hotel his home for reasons shrouded in mystery. Less illustrious guests have included the occultist Aleister Crowley, Lucky Luciano and other mafiosi. Even Giulio Andreotti, the former Italian Prime Minister, who stood trial for complicity in the murder of a journalist and mafia association in the '90s opted for the hotel's Belle Époque opulence. Ghosts of the Belle Époque showcases a richly researched history of this historic hotel, with a cast of characters ranging from the good to the bad and the decidedly ugly.
