Fra Angelico (Fra Giovanni da Fiesole) (Vicchio di Mugello,1387 – Rome,1455) Isolé du monde par les murs d'un cloître, ce moine peintre, appartenant à l'ordre des dominicains, voua son existence à la peinture religieuse. On sait très peu de choses sur le début de sa vie, mis à part qu'il était né à Vicchio, dans la vaste et fertile vallée du Mugello, non loin de Florence, que son nom était Guido di Pietro, et qu'il passa sa jeunesse à Florence, sans doute dans une sorte de bottega (atelier), car, à vingt ans, il fut reconnu comme peintre. En 1418, Fra Angelico entra dans un couvent dominicain de Fiesole en compagnie de son frère. Ils furent accueillis par les moines et, après une année de noviciat, promus au rang de frères, Guido prenant le nom que lui connaîtra la postérité, Fra Giovanni da Fiesole ; en réalité, le surnom d' «Angelico » (l'ange) ou «Il Beato » (le bienheureux) lui fut attribué après sa mort. Dorénavant, il incarna l'exemple d'un homme possédant une double personnalité : c'était à la fois un peintre et un moine dévoué. Ses thèmes étaient toujours religieux et empreints d'une profonde piété. Pourtant, la dévotion du moine n'était pas plus grande que la concentration de l'artiste. Bien qu'il vécût reclus derrière les murs du monastère, il entretint ontinuellement le contact avec les mouvements artistiques de son temps et évolua onstamment en tant que peintre. Ses premiers travaux montrent qu'il s'était formé auprès des enlumineurs, héritiers de la tradition byzantine, et qu'il avait été marqué par la simplicité du sentiment religieux de Giotto. Egalement influencé par Lorenzo Monaco et l'école siennoise, il peignit sous le patronage de Côme de Médicis. Puis il découvrit le brillant groupe de sculpteurs et d'architectes qui enrichissaient Florence de leur génie. Ghiberti exécutait alors ses bronzes destinés à orner les portes du baptistère, Donatello, sa célèbre statue de Saint Georges et la ronde des enfants dansant autour de la galerie de l'orgue du dôme ; et Luca della Robbia, aussi, était à l'oeuvre élaborant sa frise d'enfants, chantant, dansant et jouant d'instruments. Par ailleurs, Masaccio avait révélé la dignité de la forme dans la peinture. Grâce à ces artistes, la beauté du corps humain, sa vie et son mouvement, se manifestaient aux yeux des Florentins et des autres cités. Quant à Fra Angelico, il se caractérise par son enthousiasme et le sentiment accrû de vie et de mouvement dont il sut parer ses personnages.

Guido o Guidolino nacque a Vicchio nel Mugello, in Toscana alla fine del 1300. Fin da adolescente esercitava l’arte pittorica a Firenze. Attratto della vita religiosa domenicana si recò nel convento dei Frati Predicatori di Fiesole, recentemente costruito dal beato Giovanni Dominici. Era il 1420: ricevette l’abito religioso domenicano e il nuovo nome, Giovanni. Sarà così soprannominato fra Giovanni da Fiesole. Divenuto sacerdote, fu priore del convento di Fiesole. Tra il 1425 e il 1438 dipinse molte pale d’altare. Negli anni successivi, tra il 1439 e il 1445 il priore del convento di san Marco a Firenze, sant’Antonino Pierozzi, gli chiese di affrescare il chiostro, alcuni corridoi, e alcune celle dei frati. Tra il 1445 e il 1449 fu chiamato a Roma: prima da papa Eugenio IV e poi papa Nicola V gli chiesero di affrescare alcune cappelle – tuttora visitabili – all’interno del Palazzo Vaticano. Morì santamente il 18 febbraio 1455 a Roma, nel convento di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, dove è sepolto. Abitualmente è chiamato “Beato Angelico” non solo per la santità della sua vita, ma anche per la purezza della sua arte che riflette la sua capacità di contemplare il mistero di Cristo. Giovanni Paolo II il 3 ottobre 1982 ha concesso all’Ordine dei Predicatori il culto liturgico e successivamente lo ha proclamato patrono degli artisti. Agile ed efficace biografia del grande pittore domenicano, che offre un interessante ritratto dell’uomo, dell’artista e del frate Giovanni da Fiesole.
