In sei brevi e folgoranti interventi a un congresso del 1947, Martin Buber indica la via ḥasidica alla soluzione del quesito. Attingendo al suo ampio repertorio, Buber narra della saggezza di antichi rabbini, di dialoghi tra sogni premonitori, delle incertezze di esseri umani decisi a purificarsi ma dubbiosi su quale sia il modello migliore da seguire per farlo. Ne emerge una chiave di lettura dai contorni definiti: il Ḥasidismo non risponde in modo diretto, ma chiede al ricorrente Adamo che nasce con ciascuno di noi: «Sei sicuro di aver capito la domanda?» Sí, perché a non sapere dove si trova è sempre e ogni volta l'essere umano, diviso da sé stesso, conflittuale con il mondo, lontano da Dio. Smarrimento e nostalgia. Trovare la pace in sé stessi, accettare con consapevole e umile gratitudine la propria assoluta unicità nel grande disegno della Creazione, significa anche aprire il cuore al mondo, al Tutto e a tutti, per rispondere al Signore. Cosí, questo piccolo libro sarà diverso per ciascuno dei suoi lettori e si modificherà insieme con loro e con le tappe del loro cammino. È uno stradario dell'anima. Ognuno ha la sua, grazie a Dio.

Teaching a Dark Chapter explores how textbook narratives about the Fascist/Nazi past in Italy, East Germany, and West Germany followed relatively calm, undisturbed paths of little change until isolated "flashpoints" catalyzed the educational infrastructure into periods of rapid transformation. Though these flashpoints varied among Italy and the Germanys, they all roughly conformed to a chronological scheme and permanently changed how each "dark past" was represented. Historians have often neglected textbooks as sources in their engagement with the reconstruction of postfascist states and the development of postwar memory culture. But as Teaching a Dark Chapter demonstrates, textbooks yield new insights and suggest a new chronology of the changes in postwar memory culture that other sources overlook. Employing a methodological and temporal rethinking of the narratives surrounding the development of European Holocaust memory, Daniela R. P. Weiner reveals how, long before 1968, textbooks in these three countries served as important tools to influence public memory about Nazi/Fascist atrocities. As Fascism had been spread through education, then education must play a key role in undoing the damage. Thus, to repair and shape postwar societies, textbooks became an avenue to inculcate youths with desirable democratic and socialist values. Teaching a Dark Chapter weds the historical study of public memory with the educational study of textbooks to ask how and why the textbooks were created, what they said, and how they affected the society around them.

In the journal articles, historiographical essays, and numerous references to the political thought of Adriano Olivetti, the term constantly used to characterize his thinking is ‘utopia’. It is from this word, or rather, the misuse of this word, where one can begin to shed light on Olivettian political thinking. The term ‘utopia’, which has come to designate an entire vein of political literature, has also entered into common usage to define an impossible project, a wide-eyed dream; and a ‘utopian’ is that individual who longs for abstract projects instead of concrete ideas. It would be unproductive to resort to the diverse arguments of Firpo, of Mannheim, or of Bloch, of the philosophers of the Frankfurt School or others, since, as Giovanni Sartori has observed, after the word ceases to exist – where utopia is understood to mean impossibility – the impossibilities still remain. So, precisely because the literature on the political thought of Olivetti appears to suffer greatly from ‘empirical’ influences, it seems necessary to confront the complexities of his presumed utopianism with a methodological approach. This book investigates the inherent ‘impossibilities’, if they indeed exist, in the political thought of Olivetti. It also seeks to understand, as a result, if the Olivettian ideal is lacking in any true consistency, since it is secluded from an adequate analysis of historical reality, or if it is, rather, an idealism which does not lose sight of reality, in an attempt to overturn it as the basis for a plausible global vision. This book will be of interests to students and scholars in history, political economy and philosophy.
