In una delle casacce di via Anfiteatro, ricettacolo di ladri e prostitute, questa volta è successo qualcosa di veramente brutto. Gli occhi spalancati non mostrano sorpresa o terrore, inespressivi come quelli di un pesce morto. Senza dubbio si tratta di una faccenda di donne, o di un regolamento di conti fra delinquenti: è ciò che finiranno per pensare tutti, condizionati dalla natura sordida del posto. De Vincenzi no, non la pensa così. L'aspetto levantino dello scannato, il passaporto tedesco, il rinvenimento di un oggetto utilizzato per elaborare codici segreti, con l'aggiunta di un misterioso candeliere, gli prospettano un caso fuori dell'ordinario. Una caccia che lo porterà ad attraversare il Mediterraneo, sullo sfondo della nascente questione palestinese.
