The province of Grosseto in southern Tuscany shows two extremes in the treatment of Italian and foreign Jews during the Holocaust. To the east of the province, the Jews of Pitigliano, a four hundred-year-old community, were hidden for almost a year by sympathetic farmers in barns and caves. None of those in hiding were arrested and all survived the Fascist hunt for Jews. In the west, near the provincial capital of Grosseto, almost a hundred Italian and foreign Jews were imprisoned in 1943–1944 in the bishop's seminary, which he had rented to the Fascists for that purpose. About half of them, though they had thought that the bishop would protect them, were deported with his knowledge by Fascists and Nazis to Auschwitz. Thus, the Holocaust reached into this provincial corner as it did into all parts of Italy still under Italian Fascist control. This book is based on new interviews and research in local and national archives.

Con uno stile chiaro e semplice e con un impianto divulgativo, il libro narra le tragiche vicende vissute dalla popolazione siciliana nel Secondo conflitto mondiale (1940-1943). La Sicilia è un caso particolare: la prima terra europea ad essere coinvolta nel “fronte bellico” e la prima a venirne fuori, con un bilancio pauroso di circa diecimila vittime civili. È l’unica regione italiana dove gli angloamericani operano come forza “occupante”, senza alcun appoggio dell’antifascismo militante e col pieno sostegno dei mafiosi “perseguitati”. Usano la strategia del terrore dal cielo, per ottenere il cedimento totale del morale della popolazione. Cedimento che nell’Isola non arriverà mai. Per gli Alleati non è una passeggiata e neppure una guerra “in guanti bianchi”: impiegano 38 giorni, senza risparmiare ai siciliani stragi e strazi, come fanno anche le truppe tedesche. E poi la festosa accoglienza, la “caccia” al fascista e l’epurazione, la difficile convivenza di militari e civili ed il degrado morale, sociale ed economico. Fino all’armistizio, accolto senza molto entusiasmo, perché in Sicilia “la morte della Patria” era arrivata con due mesi di anticipo. Le vicende successive pongono l’Isola al di fuori della ricorrente narrazione sulla Resistenza, per la mancata adesione popolare e incondizionata alla guerra di “liberazione”. La Sicilia “si restituisce” all’Italia solo nel 1945, con l’avvio del processo che porterà la monarchia alla concessione dello Statuto speciale.

This book provides a narrative history of Italian colonialism from Italian unification in the 1860s to the first decade of the twentieth century; that is, it details Italy’s imperialism in the years of the Scramble for Africa. It deals with the factors that drove Italy to search for territory in Africa in the 1870s and 1880s and describes the reasoning behind the trajectories adopted and objectives pursued. The events that brought Italy to open conflict with the Ethiopian Empire culminating in the Italian defeat at Adowa in March 1896 are central to the book. However its scope is much broader, as it considers the establishment of Italian power in Eritrea as well as Somalia before and after the defeat. By telling its history, it explains why Italy emerged irresolute and humiliated in this, its first thrust into Africa, yet nonetheless determined to pursue expansion in the future. The seeds for the conquest of Libya in 1911 and Ethiopia in 1935 had been sown.

Beliefs, superstitions and tales about luck are present across all human cultures, according to anthropologists. We are perennially fascinated by luck and by its association with happiness and danger, uncertainty and aspiration. Yet it remains an elusive, ungraspable idea, one that slips and slides over time: all cultures reimagine what luck is and how to tame it at different stages in their history, and the modernity of the ‘long twentieth century’ is no exception to the rule. Apparently overshadowed by more conceptually tight, scientific and characteristically modern notions such as chance, contingency, probability or randomness, luck nevertheless persists in all its messiness and vitality, used in our everyday language and the subject of studies by everyone from philosophers to psychologists, economists to self-help gurus. Modern Luck sets out to explore the enigma of luck’s presence in modernity, examining the hybrid forms it has taken on in the modern imagination, and in particular in the field of modern stories. Indeed, it argues that modern luck is constituted through narrative, through modern luck stories. Analysing a rich and unusually eclectic range of narrative taken from literature, film, music, television and theatre – from Dostoevsky to Philip K. Dick, from Pinocchio to Cimino, from Curtiz to Kieślowski – it lays out first the usages and meanings of the language of luck, and then the key figures, patterns and motifs that govern the stories told about it, from the late nineteenth century to the present day.
