Dalle leggi piemontesi del 1729 che, sia pure parzialmente, laicizzarono l'istruzione pubblica, passando per il Risorgimento, l'Unità d'Italia e fino agli sviluppi più recenti dello Stato repubblicano: Antonio Santoni Rugiu e Saverio Santamaita rileggono i momenti fondamentali della storia della scuola in Italia centrata sulla figura del docente, ancora oggi priva del giusto valore sociale. «Con il risultato paradossale che, nella cosiddetta società della conoscenza e della centralità del capitale umano, una sorta di maledizione originale grava sul professore, considerato – quasi per definizione – inadeguato al suo compito».
