Despite its relevance to the subsequent development of Western Islamic studies, the intellectual contribution of early modern Catholicism is still an under-researched area. The aim of this volume is to fill this gap, offering a series of essays dealing with the study of the Qur’an and Arabic language in early modern Catholic Europe. Focusing on the circulation of manuscripts, translations and printed books, the essays highlight how Catholic Orientalism contributed to the birth and spread of Western Islamic studies, although sometimes it was still directed towards religious polemics. Among the protagonists of this period of Islamic studies, the volume will focus on Catholic priests, missionaries, religious orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, Carmelites) Eastern Christians, converts, and other prominent figures in the Catholic culture of the time. Il Corano è il libro più sacro del mondo islamico, per ogni musulmano è il bene più prezioso. Il termine deriva dall'arabo al-Qur'an, che secondo alcuni studiosi è di derivazione siriaca ed è da ricollegare al verbo qara'a, "leggere". Il Corano è dunque una lettura ad alta voce, una recitazione.Il Corano è un testo complesso: secondo la tradizione islamica contiene la raccolta completa delle rivelazioni fatte da Dio a Maometto tramite l'arcangelo Gabriele, fra il 610 e il 632. Le rivelazioni furono comunicate dal Profeta in forma orale e furono in seguito trascritte da alcuni seguaci.Il testo ufficiale fu fissato durante il terzo califfato (Othman, 644-656).Il Corano è suddiviso in 114 capitoli, detti sure (dall'arabo surah, "sequenze") divise in versetti, chiamati 'ajat; sono disposte secondo un ordine decrescente (da quelle più lunghe a quelle più brevi) con un'unica eccezione: la prima sura, di soli sette versetti, che presenta la preghiera fondamentale per i musulmani.Tutte le sure cominciano con la basmallah, cioè con la formula "nel nome di Dio, il Clemente, il Misericordioso"; l'unica eccezione è la sura 9.

Non sono molti i libri seri sull'Islam che si possono trovare in libreria. Per questo al lettore non avvertito occorre segnalare con forza questo di Massimo Campanini: è un'ottima introduzione non solo al testo sacro dei musulmani, ma anche alla religione islamica stessa. Fabrizio Vecoli, "L'Indice" Il Corano è il libro sacro dell'Islam, anzi nella cultura islamica è, per antonomasia, 'il Libro'. Testo religioso, spirituale e pratico a un tempo, Logos di Dio, inimitabile per suo stesso assunto, libro dai molti nomi e dai molteplici modi di lettura, 'mare profondo' che non può essere esaurito: accostarsi a esso rappresenta per noi occidentali un'impresa irta di difficoltà. In queste pagine, un percorso di conoscenza e comprensione del Corano: le vicende della composizione, la struttura, i temi portanti e, soprattutto, l'interpretazione, indispensabile chiave d'accesso al messaggio divino.
