Il corpo, nella sua insopprimibile materialità e, al contempo, profonda valenza simbolica, costituisce il luogo dove appaiono maggiormente evidenti le ferite della violenza della Storia inferte dal tempo presente. Il corpo senza vita trasportato dalle onde durante l’ennesimo naufragio mediterraneo. Il corpo assediato, tenuto a distanza e respinto attraverso le frontiere europee. Il corpo esotico venduto e acquistato nei circuiti del sesso commerciale nelle strade delle nostre città. Il corpo temuto e, dunque, denigrato e vilipeso, perché assurto a simbolo di un’alterità inconciliabile con l’Occidente. E, ancora, il corpo sottomesso, subalterno, oltraggiato. Il corpo silente, tacitato, di chi si è trovato a misurarsi con la dimensione dell’orrore e dell’indicibile e che appare oramai denudato, oltre che dei diritti, di ogni valenza umana. Corpi apparentemente relegati negli interstizi più oscuri della nostra modernità che interpellano e inducono a guardare alle matrici storiche, politiche e sociali della sofferenza di cui sono emblema. Ma, allo stesso tempo, corpi che recano incise nella carne memorie scomode che scardinano orizzonti morali e culturali che pensavamo acquisiti. Partendo dall’esperienza di ricerca nel campo delle migrazioni maturata dall’Autrice nel corso degli ultimi quindici anni, il volume propone un affresco di largo respiro sui processi di costruzione dell’alterità nella società contemporanea attraverso una prospettiva che coniuga l’analisi dei fenomeni e delle storie – a partire da alcuni casi-studio – con la riflessione teorica a carattere sociale.

This book deals with social protection programmes targeted to people trafficked for the scope of sexual exploitation. It provides empirical evidence on the N.A.Ve programme, in the north-eastern Italian Veneto Region, and its evolution. It elaborates on the programme by narrating the subjective experiences of practitioners and of a specific group of beneficiaries: young Nigerian women - some in transition towards the majority age. The book builds on qualitative research, including a long institutional ethnographic research and semi-structured interviews carried out in the period 2019-2021, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. It takes an intersectional, social work and humanitarian governance perspective to examine the multiple dimensions of vulnerability (age, gender, geographical origin, type of exploitation) characterising trafficked and sexually exploited Nigerian women. It draws attention to the precariousness of protection trajectories, but also on the agency of these women, by building on the autonomy of migration approach, while shedding light on the temporal tensions between biographical and institutional times. Calling for greater space for women’s voices and for their involvement in the co-development of protection programmes, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, social work and politics, as well as to practitioners and policymakers interested in migration and trafficking. La criminalità organizzata, soprattutto di tipo mafioso, è un oggetto di analisi che impone ai ricercatori uno sguardo critico. Come si può, infatti, studiare un fenomeno segreto, oscuro, illegale, pericoloso? Un fenomeno che non si presta a essere osservato direttamente, che risulta sovraccarico di immagini di senso comune e che risente di rappresentazioni sociali diffuse, profondamente legate alla prospettiva istituzionale? Gli studi sulle mafie assistono a una crescita costante, testimoniata dalla vivacità del confronto scientifico a livello internazionale, dall’avvio di progetti di ricerca interdisciplinari e dall’emergere di centri di ricerca specializzati fuori e dentro l’accademia. Using in-depth field research and analysis of case studies, Mafia Violence: Political, Symbolic, and Economic Forms of Violence in Camorra Clans focuses attention on the phenomenon of violence performed by Italian organised crime groups, devoting specific attention to the Camorra, which has been responsible since the mid-1980s for almost half of all mafia homicides documented in Italy. The Camorra has acquired increased visibility at an international level due to its intense use of violence and high level of dangerousness, but until now, the study of the different forms of violence implemented by mafias has not received systematic attention at the scientific level. Hence, this book fills this gap by providing a both theoretical and empirical contribution toward the analysis of one of the most unknown – although highly visible and dangerous – dimension of mafias’ action. This collection of work by distinguished scholars provides a unique overview of the multifaceted characteristics of violence currently performed by mafia groups in Italy by focusing on specific actors – i.e., Camorra clans – but also other traditional mafia organisations such as Cosa Nostra and ’Ndrangheta; specific contexts – i.e., different territories and different markets, both legal and illegal; and specific practices and performances. Part I takes a diachronic and comparative perspective to provide an overview of mafias’ violence during the past 30 years, focusing on the three most prominent criminal organisations active in Italy: Camorra, Cosa Nostra, and ’Ndrangheta. Based on the outcomes of a major project carried out by a research group at the University of Naples Federico II from 2015 to 2017, Part II looks at the use of violence by Camorra clans, incorporating information from case studies, judicial files, law enforcement investigations, wiretappings, interviews with privileged observers, firsthand empirical data, and historical documents and social sciences literature. Using a multi-disciplinary approach drawing from criminology, sociology, history, anthropology, economics, political science, and geography, this book is essential reading for international researchers and practitioners interested in piecing together the full picture of modern organised crime.

Nata dallo studio del linguaggio, dei processi segnici e dei sistemi di relazioni, la semiotica ha immediatamente mostrato, e nel tempo consolidato, la sua vocazione intrinseca di metodologia per lo studio della cultura. La Frontiera Interna indaga il modo in cui si costituisce il confine di una cultura ed in cui si strutturano i meccanismi semiotici attraverso cui essa definisce le proprie forme di alterità. Dopo una riflessione iniziale sull’organizzazione semiotica della Roma dei Papi, la riflessione si sviluppa come una comparazione diacronica fra due sistemi semiotici di definizione e interazione con l’alterità: quello in vigore durante il regime fascista e quello che progressivamente si delinea nel recente periodo delle migrazioni internazionali, letto dal punto di vista particolare della relazione con le collettività Rom e Sinti. In questo modo, le strategie discorsive, le procedure di osservazione del corpo e le retoriche dello spazio che definiscono, sin dai primi anni del regime fascista, un nuovo modello di identità culturale e contemporaneamente un “sistema dei reietti” adeguato alla nuova immagine della società che si sta affermando, sono messe a confronto con le modalità semiotiche di definizione dell’alterità contemporanea. Questo permette, attraverso l’analisi delle discontinuità significative fra passato e presente, di considerare come operi e attraverso quali linguaggi si articoli, in modo inedito, il confine semiotico contemporaneo ma anche quali siano le tattiche semiotiche che tentano di incrinarne i meccanismi discorsivi e disorientarne i dispositivi di osservazione.
