Non si può parlare di Cristianesimo o Islam oggi senza considerare un terzo elemento: la cornice secolare. Nel mondo islamico la tendenza secolare, per quanto generalmente implicita, tocca gli stili di vita e in molti casi anche gli assetti statuali. Il fondamentalismo stesso, violento e non-violento, reagisce a un pericolo di secolarizzazione percepito come reale.
