Come il bianco contiene il nero, come il positivo attrae il negativo, così il concetto di male assoluto si è sviluppato nel corso della storia dell’umanità. Lo credevano gli antichi, dagli Assiri ai Maya, dai Romani agli Israeliti, ne erano convinti i dottori della Chiesa e gli inquisitori medievali tanto da portare alle estreme conseguenze la sua persecuzione, con roghi e patiboli oggi esecrati. Il Diavolo si è evoluto fino a divenire il protagonista di trattati di demonologia, romanzi, poemi, quadri e affreschi, opere liriche, canzoni rock, film e fumetti manga giapponesi. I suoi simboli si sono moltiplicati, le sue raffigurazioni sono passate dalla pietra dei templi e delle grandi cattedrali, dove servivano da monito ai credenti, al web rigurgitante di siti, blog e fanzine dedicati apertamente al Maligno. La cronaca nera ne ha fatto il sinistro e occulto protagonista di quei delitti che sfuggono alla razionalità umana, dalle stragi alle sette sataniche, dai nuovi rituali occulti alle organizzazioni esoteriche più depravate. La Chiesa cattolica e anche le altre religioni continuano a mettere in guardia i fedeli dalla sua opera malefica e dalla sua presenza tutt’altro che teorica e persino la moderna psichiatria e la psicologia si sono occupate di possessioni ed esorcismi. L’Apocalisse e le profezie ne anticipano la sua nuova venuta, la presa del potere da parte dell’Anticristo, fino allo scontro e al giudizio finale in cui il male dovrà soccombere definitivamente. Maledetto e condannato, evocato e adorato, questo essere, questa figura sinistra e arcana, ha avuto da sempre un suo ruolo, presunto o negato, al tavolo delle vicende umane e, anche quando si è smesso di credere ufficialmente nella sua esistenza, Satana ha continuato a far sospettare di aggirarsi tra gli uomini e di essere lì a danzare sul mondo, sulle sue immani tragedie e sui suoi dolori.
