Lo scopo della filosofia è raggiungere una verità definitiva, riguardante il mondo e l’uomo che abita questo mondo. Il raggiungimento di questo scopo, per il filosofo, non è una questione di velleità intellettuale o ambizione accademica, ma costituisce una responsabilità dinanzi alla storia. La ragione è l’elemento specificamente umano che guida il filosofo nella realizzazione di questo compito infinito. Il destino della filosofia è inevitabilmente intrecciato alla volontà di ogni singolo pensatore di persistere nella ricerca di quei metodi e quei concetti che soli permettono di giungere a una comprensione evidente della realtà. In uno dei suoi ultimi scritti, redatto agli inizi della temperie nazista, Edmund Husserl lancia un monito alla coscienza degli europei: abbandonare la filosofia, ossia la forma più alta dell’autonomia della ragione, significa rinunciare al dono più prezioso e insieme alla responsabilità più grande, che l’uomo ha ereditato dalla sua storia. Presentati in una nuova traduzione italiana, il testo è preceduto dall’Introduzione di Angela Ales Bello, tra i massimi esperti del pensiero fenomenologico.

L’esemplarità di Simmel e il suo essere un “classico” nostro contemporaneo sono una formidabile conferma di quanto sia proficua per noi non solo la sua “eredità”, ma soprattutto la sua “fortuna” postuma. Da qui “l’intenzione carsica” di questo libro sulla filosofia di Simmel, ovvero il “pendolo filosofico” che nelle sue pagine pulsa oscillando ritmicamente nella sua opera e che procede oltre, da Simmel a noi e, viceversa, attraverso Hegel e la potenza del negativo, da noi a Simmel. Dunque, Simmel e noi e, parimenti, noi e Simmel.
