Riscoprire il decorativo, una delle tendenze estetiche più riconoscibili del xx secolo. Amata dagli artisti simbolisti e Art Nouveau, bollata a lungo come superficiale e irrazionale, oggi la decorazione riemerge nelle esperienze di un’arte che, uscendo dai recinti disciplinari, deborda nel quotidiano e sempre più si identifica con il design.Giuliana Altea prende spunto dalle tesi di Jacques Soullilou per esaminare il decorativo come nodo teorico in cui si concentrano le tensioni della nostra cultura. Legato ideologicamente al popolare, al femminile, al primitivo – le tre «periferie» che circondano il soggetto legittimo maschiobianco-occidentale –, il decorativo prende forma in ambiti alti e bassi della produzione culturale, come l’arte d’avanguardia, l’arredamento d’interni, la moda, l’architettura, o in figure chiave della modernità come la Parisienne o la prostituta. È un fantasma nel suo accostarsi a identità altre, «perennemente in bilico tra autonomia ed eteronomia, tra singolarità e alterità, tra arte e vita».Utilizzando gli strumenti analitici dei cultural studies, Il fantasma del decorativo segue le vicende dell’ornamento e della decorazione dalla fine dell’Ottocento in avanti. Il periodo di piena accettazione con i pittori Nabis e l’Art Nouveau, fino alla Secessione viennese; la censura con l’avvento del Modernismo; la presenza sorprendente nell’opera delle avanguardie, soprattutto in Klee, Mondrian e Kandinskij; la posizione ambigua del Cubismo, esemplificata dall’«assunzione parodistica e connivente» dell’ornamento borghese da parte di Picasso nei suoi collage; l’intreccio simbolico con la figura femminile in Matisse. E ancora, nel secondo dopoguerra, la dimensione decorativa affiora come spinta all’espansione ambientale nelle opere di artisti quali Jackson Pollock e Lucio Fontana, mentre nel design – con Charles e Ray Eames in America e Gio Ponti in Italia – assume i tratti di un nuovo Modernismo, più caldo e carico di suggestioni emotive.Con l’avvento del postmoderno le periferie diventano centro, l’alterità si trasforma, il decorativo smette di essere opposto all’arte «avanzata». Dall’utopia ottocentesca della Gesamtkunstwerk si giunge a un presente in cui tutta l’arte è applicata e decorativa: applicata al museo e al sistema dell’arte, decorativa nel circuito del collezionismo.In attesa di scoprire il prossimo volto del fantasma.
