When the trade center collapsed in New York, I was sitting at my desk at the newspaper La Provincia di Como, in Italy. If I cannot forget that day, it is not only because that major event shuttered me, but in reason of the cognitive limits that I could experiment. For the first time in my professional career, I realized that a further theoretical step was asked in order to throw light on evildoing. This philosophical investigation is aimed at exploring the loss of humanity from a phenomenological perspective integrated with a metaphysical approach. It collects and develops a decade of theoretical researches, mainly published in Italy, focused on the anthropological aspects of global terrorism from which I moved further to explore human fragility. Despair, sloth, and the pain of traumas are explored in part II of the investigation that ends with the story of Etty Hillesum, the Dutch intellectual who was able to flourish in the midst of the Nazi's hell.

Come spesso accade, però, la realtà è completamente differente e ciò che può sembrare un sogno rischia di diventare un incubo per chi,come la gente d’Irlanda, è costretto a vivere in quella realtà ogni giorno della propria vita.Immagina che la tua città sia pattugliata costantemente da migliaia di soldati armati, filo spinato e cancelli ovunque; immagina che per andare al cinema tu debba passare diversi posti di blocco;immagina ancora di essere perquisito ed interrogato ad ogni controllo dei soldati; poi immagina che tutta la gente che conosci abbia un amico o un parente ucciso, ferito o imprigionato; pensa che nello Stato in cui vivi i tribunali non hanno giuria e che nelle carceri abbondano le torture e i maltrattamenti. El libro que ofrezco a los lectores nace a partir de un elenco de artículos que he elaborado a lo largo de diez años de investigaciones sobre el terrorismo principalmente en España y sus víctimas, y que ahora cobran unidad en este texto. El núcleo central de libro es una reflexión contra la impunidad ideológica, jurídica y social que envuelve con cierta asiduidad al fenómeno del terrorismo en nuestro tiempo. El terrorismo ha afectado el continente Europeo desde el siglo XIX, pero ha ido cambiando paulatinamente su modo de manifestarse. Si bien en el siglo XX el terrorismo ha perpetrado sus actos violentos justificándolos en las ideologías clásicas de extrema derecha y de extrema izquierda, a partir del siglo XXI está tratando de legitimar sus crímenes también en un ideario político-religioso a partir de una interpretación extremista y belicosa de las sagradas escrituras musulmanas.
