Il dibattito filosofico intorno al ‘nuovo realismo’ ha contribuito a mettere sotto una luce non prevista l’importanza del pensiero di Schelling. In lui la realtà, in quanto irriducibile eccedenza dell’Essere, precede già da sempre il pensiero. Non si tratta però di una zona opaca e impenetrabile che tutt’al più garantisce l’oggettività delle cose, bensì dell’ambito dinamico originario della libertà, che determina in divenire le diverse forme dell’Essere e che coinvolge direttamente l’uomo e le sue azioni. Secondo Schelling, la libertà umana è il punto centrale della filosofia, perché a partire da essa e dalle sue contraddizioni si manifesta la conflittualità dell’Essere in generale, nel suo rapporto con il divenire della storia. Si giunge così ad affermare una Libertà originaria, essenziale e intimamente conflittuale, che – come osserva Heidegger – supera l’idea moderna di libertà come proprietà e facoltà del singolo individuo. Il libro tiene conto fra l’altro dei preziosi appunti del Seminario su Schelling che Martin Heidegger tenne nel 1927-28, subito dopo la pubblicazione di Essere e tempo.

Alle soglie della follia, Nietzsche sosterrà di aver fatto all’umanità, con lo “Zarathustra”, il più grande dono che essa abbia mai avuto: “Questo libro, una voce che passa sui millenni, non solo è il libro più alto che esista [...], ma anche il più profondo, generato dalla più intrinseca ricchezza della verità, una fonte inesauribile dove non si può calare il secchio senza farlo risalire colmo d’oro e di bontà”. Perciò Nietzsche gli assegnerà una posizione preminente fra tutti i libri: “Il primo libro di tutti i millenni, la Bibbia dell’avvenire, la suprema esplosione del genio umano, in cui è incluso il destino dell’umanità”. “Così parlò Zarathustra” rappresenta in effetti un unicum irripetibile nella storia della letteratura e della filosofia: i pensieri più abissali (la diagnosi del nichilismo, l’eterno ritorno, il superuomo, la volontà di potenza) sono presentati al lettore non in forma teoretica, argomentativa, bensì come parola viva dell’alter ego dell’autore, in modo tale da consentire a Nietzsche di rivelarsi come uno dei più grandi stilisti della lingua tedesca e uno dei vertici assoluti raggiunti dalla sua poesia. Questo capolavoro poetico e filosofico viene qui proposto in un’edizione agile, ma dotata di apparati critici sufficienti a introdurre il lettore a quello che è il più difficile dei compiti, secondo Nietzsche stesso: non travisarne il pensiero, ma “leggerlo bene”.
