La dominazione di Filippo Maria Visconti in Lombardia (1412-1447) fu il risultato di un tentativo, solo parzialmente riuscito, di ricomporre i vasti territori già dominati dal primo duca, Giangaleazzo Visconti. Per trentacinque anni, il terzo duca di Milano governò uno stato ampio, ricco e prospero, ne rafforzò le istituzioni, coltivò alte ambizioni monarchiche e proclamò idee di pace, di concordia e di giustizia. L’uso delle armi e della diplomazia e il serrato confronto con gli attori politici, sociali ed economici del dominio furono gli strumenti adottati per rafforzare e consolidare il dominio ducale. Gli autori di questo volume illustrano i modelli politici sottostanti all’esercizio dell’autorità del duca, i modi di relazione che si stabilirono tra autorità e sudditi, la costruzione dell’apparato simbolico e ideologico, la committenza artistica del principe, la politica ecclesiastica e le vicende religiose del ducato sullo sfondo dei concili di Costanza e Basilea. Sono inoltre analizzati alcuni specifici momenti della politica ducale: gli atti di dedizione del 1412, l’assetto geopolitico fissato nel 1435 dopo la vittoria di Ponza, la crisi degli ultimi anni del ducato caratterizzata dalla spietata esecutività delle pratiche di governo. Il libro, in definitiva, vuole offrire una visione più approfondita e problematica della dominazione del terzo duca di Milano, che nei suoi chiaroscuri risulta essere un momento importante della stabilizzazione degli assetti dello stato regionale lombardo.

The domination of Filippo Maria Visconti in Lombardy (1412-1447) was the result of an attempt, only partially successful, to recompose the vast territories already dominated by the first duke, Giangaleazzo Visconti. For thirty-five years, the third duke of Milan governed a large, rich and prosperous state, strengthened its institutions, cultivated high monarchical ambitions and proclaimed ideas of peace, concord and justice. The use of force and diplomacy and the close confrontation with the political, social and economic actors of the domain were the tools adopted to strengthen and consolidate the ducal domination. The authors of this volume illustrate the political models underlying the exercise of the duke's authority, the ways of establishing relationships between authorities and subjects, the construction of the symbolic and ideological apparatus, the artistic commission of the prince, ecclesiastical politics and the religious events of the duchy against the background of the councils of Constance and Basel. Some specific moments of ducal politics are also analyzed: the deeds of dedication of 1412, the geopolitical set established in 1435 after the victory of Ponza, the crisis of the last years of the duchy characterized by the ruthless execution of the government practices. Ultimately, the book aims to offer a more in-depth and problematic view of the domination of the third duke of Milan, which in its chiaroscuro turns out to be an important moment in the stabilization of the structures of the Lombard regional state.

In the late Middle Ages, Italy was one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. Its coasts, the Apennines, the perialpine area and the plains were all home to a large number of smaller towns, lands, villages, castra, and 'quasi cites'. These settlements were all very diverse in terms of demographic consistency, social articulation and economic dynamism, but together they constituted a characteristic and constitutive element of the Italian historical identity: an 'original personality'. This volume, thanks to some framing essays and a mapping of individual cases involving most of the northern, central and southern regions, aims at investigating the active research on this topic over the last thirty to forty years.

Space matters. It situates our history, structures our daily lives, and often determines what we can and cannot do. Borders are central to this reality. Tools and symbols of separation, power, and identity, they bring people together as much as they set them apart. This book explores how borders were understood, made, and encountered at the end of the Middle Ages, and what they can tell us about the spatial fabric of society at the threshold of modernity. It shows that pre-modern borders were nothing like the fuzzy lines they are typically made out to be, that border-making was rarely a top-down process and should instead be studied as an interactive endeavour, and that space was shaped by communities far more than states in this period. At its core, Borders and the Politics of Space in Late Medieval Italy is the account of a frontier which would mark the Italian peninsula for centuries, that between the territories of the Duchy of Milan and those of the Republic of Venice. But it is also a study of how rulers and subjects alike defined spaces they could call their own. Luca Zenobi combines methods from several disciplines and applies them to a range of evidence from twenty different libraries and archives, including theoretical treatises and pragmatic records, written chronicles and cartographic visualisations, private documents and official correspondence. This volume is the first one in a collection connected to the PRIN project on Ruling in hard times. Patterns of Power and practices of government in the making of Carolingian Italy. Its focus lays on bishops and their networks of relationships in late-8th and 9th-century Italy.
