Tra scoperte e memorie, la narrazione si dipana lungo l’Egitto, l’Etiopia, l’Arabia Saudita, l’Iraq e l’Iran. Mescolando i ricordi delle sue tante esplorazioni alle letture di esperti, storici e scrittori, Kaplan rievoca epoche e paesaggi, muovendosi agilmente tra realtà locali complesse, forte di un’unica certezza: «attraversare un paese, annusarne gli odori, guardare come si comportano le persone, non offre risposte definitive, ma aiuta. Permette di toccare con mano il terreno, per non lasciare che i luoghi reali si dissolvano e diventino astratti». Questo sguardo si rivela fecondo, capace di riflettere su eventi e scenari, millenni e dinastie, caos e imperi, senza esaurire ma moltiplicando gli interrogativi: «Quale direzione prenderà il corso delle cose? Quali dimensioni politiche assumerà questa vasta regione che occupa gran parte della fascia subtropicale tra l’Europa e l’Estremo Oriente? Riuscirà a tirarsi fuori da decenni di instabilità e malgoverno e a trovare un compromesso tra la tirannia da un lato e l’anarchia dall’altro?».

Stephen Hawking avrebbe dovuto passare più tempo ad aiutare la scienza medica a risolvere i problemi, compreso il suo, anziché cercare buchi neri nelle profondità della sua "mente brillante", criticando aspramente quella che lo ha creato. Il dramma che lo ha reso disabile avrebbe potuto spingerlo a usare la sua "mente brillante" per aiutare gli altri sulla terra, invece di cercare buchi neri e inseguire l'infinitesimo, lasciando che se ne occupino quelli che non sono in condizioni fisiche come la sua. Avrebbe potuto divertirsi con un telescopio a casa sua, come facevo io quando abitavo a Miami, North Miami Beach, e poi a Oakland Park, mentre lo scorrere del tempo scandiva la mia vita. A quanto ne so, l'orgoglio di essere l'uomo dei buchi neri non lo sta aiutando, perché avrebbe dovuto spiegarci come difenderci da questi mostri anti Dio. Se uno di loro va fuori orbita e ci viene addosso, lui e la sua famiglia diventano cibo per buchi neri, poiché non hanno un Dio che li difende. Questi divoratori della galassia terrorizzano angeli e demoni, e turbano i sogni dei bambini.

Moving from a historical and cultural perspective, this book examines the geo-political and socio-economic changes involving the enlarged Mediterranean.
