Scritto nel 1931, Le montagne delle follia – in cui si racconta il catastrofico esito di una spedizione nelle profondità inesplorate del continente antartico – fu pubblicato soltanto cinque anni più tardi, in più puntate, sulla rivista fantascientifica Astounding Stories. Tra questi due momenti, un terzo, vicinissimo alla prima data, è costituito dal rifiuto di Farnsworth Wright di pubblicare l’opera su Weird Tales, perché, a detta dell’editore, troppo lunga. L’orrore, d’altronde, necessita di poche molecole di azoto, di respiri corti, mutili, di un sentimento di morte improvvisa accompagnato a brevi, fulminanti agonie: chi potrebbe sopportare uno spavento protratto oltremisura nel tempo? Eppure, tra le montagne della follia l’eco della paura si centuplica di grotta in grotta, e la resilienza del lettore e dei personaggi è spinta al limite della sopportazione. Il Saggiatore ripropone questo classico in una traduzione finalmente completa, che rifugge la tentazione di ricondurre a una mal compresa «piacevolezza» lo stile ossessivo, tassonomico, rituale di Lovecraft. Nella sua prosa l’orrore opera sempre nella stanza accanto, senza fare ostaggio di testimoni oculari; riempie le tubature e si riverbera fonicamente tra le pareti (Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!), in un linguaggio nero che esisteva già prima del linguaggio umano e della parola, e che l’uomo non può decifrare; emana miasmi intollerabili e sconosciuti; lascia escoriazioni e orifizi ovunque. Ma non si vede. O almeno, non si vede mai del tutto: si cela nei cunicoli, dietro rocce cadute, al fondo di abissi glaciali. Così si compone il paesaggio delle Montagne, dipinto da un pittore alieno: in un simile sacro bosco, sovrumano, dove catene montuose di ardesia precambiana si alzano fino all’orlo inimmaginabile del pianeta, l’uomo diventa cacciagione, preda, o addirittura campione scientifico da sezionare e notomizzare, crudamente, come un esemplare di animale raro appena scoperto. La geografia antartica descritta da Lovecraft, però, è anche e soprattutto una geografia interiore, di certe latenze oniriche castrate dal meccanismo di rimozione, in cui una potenza cosmica anteriore all’Eocene o al Cretaceo – e a qualsiasi categoria temporale postulabile dal raziocinio umano – imperversa originando forme inaudite, abissi impercorribili, vette impossibili da scalare. E agguanta e annichila tutto ciò che si trova davanti.

On the evening of Wednesday, August 27, 1913, at about eight-thirty o'clock, the population of the small seaside village of Potowonket, Maine, U.S.A., was aroused by a thunderous report accompanied by a blinding flash; and persons near the shore beheld a mammoth ball of fire dart from the heavens into the sea but a short distance out, sending up a prodigious column of water. The following Sunday a fishing party composed of John Richmond, Peter B. Carr, and Simon Canfield, caught in their trawl and dragged ashore a mass of metallic rock, weighing 360 pounds, and looking (as Mr. Canfield said) like a piece of slag. Most of the inhabitants agreed that this heavy body was none other than the fireball which had fallen from the sky four days before; and Dr. Richard M. Jones, the local scientific authority, allowed that it must be an aerolite or meteoric stone. In chipping off specimens to send to an expert Boston analyst, Dr. Jones discovered imbedded in the semi-metallic mass the strange book containing the ensuing tale, which is still in his possession. "
