Morì nel 1935. Grande animatore dei circoli culturali di cui faceva parte, fondò e diresse moltissime riviste letterarie, esercitando un’influenza decisiva sul mondo intellettuale dell’epoca. Poeta e scrittore prolifico, fu anche un appassionato studioso di esoterismo. Tra le sue opere principali ricordiamo: Il poeta è un fingitore, Una sola moltitudine, Poesie di Alvaro de Campos. Sua singolare caratteristica era quella di firmare i suoi libri con degli eteronimi: nomi e cognomi di uomini immaginari, con biografie e personalità molto ben definite.

Il Livro do Desassossego è costituito soprattutto da una disordinata collezione di frammenti nutriti dalla linfa dell’inquietudine esistenziale, dello spleen, del perturbante. L’opera originale è di fatto uno zibaldone, un diario mai licenziato dall’autore come opera chiusa e compiuta.
