The idea of the book “Science and Conservation for Museum Collections” was born as a result of the experience made by CNR-ISTEC (Faenza) in the implementation of a course for Syrian restorers at the National Museum in Damascus. The book takes into consideration archaeological artefacts made out of the most common materials, like stones (both natural and artificial), mosaics, ceramics, glass, metals, wood and textiles, together with less diffuse artefacts and materials, like clay tablets, goldsmith artefacts, icons, leather and skin objects, bones and ivory, coral and mother of pearl. Each type of material is treated from four different points of view: composition and processing technology; alteration and degradation causes and mechanisms; procedures for conservative intervention; case studies and/or examples of conservation and restoration. The book is mainly addressed to students, young restorers, conservators and conservation scientists all around the world. But the book can be usefully read by expert professionals too, because nobody can know everything and the experts often need to learn something of the materials not included in their specific knowledge. Un manuale per coloro che intendono approfondire le tecniche di intervento per il risanamento dei danni strutturali nei dipinti su tela. L’autore, partendo da un excursus storico, analizza l’utilizzo dei materiali e delle pratiche di restauro strutturale approfondendone anche i limiti e i danni che, talvolta, hanno arrecato alle opere. Sulla base di questi presupposti, viene condotto uno studio del supporto tessile utilizzando un approccio al suo restauro che si avvale di parametri scientifici. Lo studio, l’intervento conservativo e la ricomposizione di quattro lacerti di mosaici a partire dalla messa in sicurezza dei brani fino alla collocazione di questi su di un supporto rigido autoportante. Il nodo centrale che ha influenzato l’intero iter progettuale è stato la volontà di mantenere alcune deformazioni dovute alla funzione pavimentale e al lungo periodo di interramento, a testimonianza della storia di un reperto archeologico, e parallelamente di condurre la rimozione di ulteriori deformazioni dovute all’intervento di estrazione. I lacerti musivi, di epoca romana provenienti dall’area del Gruppo Episcopale di Asti, sono stati strappati durante le fasi dello scavo archeologico (2001-2009) e appartenevano a tre ambienti di prestigio di una domus romana. Attraverso lo studio della documentazione di scavo e il confronto con pavimentazioni musive, pertinenti per lo più alla medesima area geografica, è stato possibile avanzare ipotesi di ricostruzione per i tre brani musivi e confermare la datazione (I-II secolo d.C.) già proposta negli studi già pubblicati. Ulteriori approfondimenti di carattere scientifico hanno permesso di sciogliere le vicende conservative che hanno caratterizzato la storia dei lacerti, di indagarne la tecnica esecutiva e di circoscrivere il bacino di provenienza dei materiali costitutivi.
