Il volume analizza i rapporti tra i due miti “allo specchio”: il mito americano per il cinema italiano e, viceversa, il mito europeo (e italiano) per il cinema americano. Dagli anni trenta al nuovo millennio, la cultura e il cinema italiani sono stati fortemente influenzati dall’immaginario americano. Si vedano Ossessione o C’era una volta il west. Basta pensare all’immagine forte della Monument Valley, che produce infinite sequenze del road movie o del western; o al romanzo americano, che viene amato da varie generazioni di scrittori e registi. Viceversa, alcuni stereotipi italiani (la “grande bellezza” di Roma e del paesaggio italiano, il cibo, la sensualità, Fellini ecc.) influenzano fortemente il cinema statunitense (basta pensare a Vancanze romane)

All’inizio degli anni Trenta molti fattori consentono in Italia la rinascita di una cinematografia giunta a toccare quota zero: una legge che incoraggia la ripresa della produzione senza troppo ostacolare la marcia trionfale in atto delle Majors americane, l’avvento del sonoro e un vero e proprio ricambio generazionale, che vede entrare in scena un gruppo di giovani guidati da Alessandro Blasetti e ispirati dalle teorie e pratiche del cinema sovietico. Dai primi anni Trenta alla caduta del regime la parola d’ordine, comune a tutte le voci – fasciste e antifasciste – del cinema italiano è aprire gli occhi sul Paese, fino a quel momento assente dal grande schermo. La fame di realtà unisce e accomuna una serie di film che, da Gli uomini che mascalzoni! di Camerini, attraversano l’intero periodo fino ad approdare a Ossessione di Visconti, il momento più alto nella realizzazione di un nuovo modo di fare cinema. Con l’entrata in guerra le pellicole non celebrano tanto l’eroismo o lo spirito guerresco, quanto piuttosto tradiscono il senso dell’assedio, la caduta delle speranze, il desiderio di pace e l’attesa della fine del conflitto. I venti mesi di Salò suggellano il periodo con l’afasia e il silenzio di una produzione pressoché inesistente.

Da Francesca Bertini a Lyda Borelli, da Pina Menichelli a Hesperia, a Leda Gys, a Eleonora Duse, l’esercito delle dive immortalate in film come Rapsodia satanica, Tigre reale, Odette, Il fuoco, La signora delle camelie o Malombra, ispira nel pubblico profonde passioni e sollecita trasformazioni di mentalità e costume. Ma l'infatuazione, di pari passo con l'industria cinematografica nazionale, si esaurisce in fretta. Intorno agli anni Venti un'industria che aveva esportato le sue pellicole in tutto il mondo vede crollare la produzione da centinaia di titoli a poche unità, mentre l'avanzata delle Majors americane e del cinema europeo aggrava la crisi italiana e provoca l'emigrazione massiccia di attori, tecnici e registi. In questo scenario desolante, nel 1929, un gruppo di giovani italiani realizza un film intitolato Sole. Sin dal nome quel lavoro sembra contenere la speranza e la scintilla della rinascita.

When America began to emerge as a world power at the end of the nineteenth century, Italy was a young nation, recently unified. The technological advances brought about by electricity and the combustion engine were vastly speeding up the capacity of news, ideas, and artefacts to travel internationally. Furthermore, improved literacy and social reforms had produced an Italian working class with increased time, money, and education. At the turn of the century, if Italy's ruling elite continued the tradition of viewing Paris as a model of sophistication and good taste, millions of lowly-educated Italians began to dream of America, and many bought a transatlantic ticket to migrate there. By the 1920s, Italians were encountering America through Hollywood films and, thanks to illustrated magazines, they were mesmerised by the sight of Manhattan's futuristic skyline and by news of American lifestyle. The USA offered a model of modernity which flouted national borders and spoke to all. It could be snubbed, adored, or transformed for one's personal use, but it could not be ignored. Perversely, Italy was by then in the hands of a totalitarian dictatorship, Mussolini's Fascism. What were the effects of the nationalistic policies and campaigns aimed at protecting Italians from this supposedly pernicious foreign influence? What did Mussolini think of America? Why were jazz, American literature, and comics so popular, even as the USA became Italy's political enemy? America in Italian Culture provides a scholarly and captivating narrative of this epochal shift in Italian culture.

These "empire films" were Italy's entry into an international market for the exotic. The films engaged its most experienced and cosmopolitan directors (Augusto Genina, Mario Camerini) as well as new filmmakers (Roberto Rossellini) who would make their marks in the postwar years. Ben-Ghiat sees these films as part of the aesthetic development that would lead to neo-realism. Shot in Libya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, these movies reinforced Fascist racial and labor policies and were largely forgotten after the war.
