Questo libro è l’ultimo lavoro a cui si dedicò Mario Praz: una vasta scelta dai suoi scritti di viaggio (in buona parte mai prima raccolti), preceduta da un’introduzione inedita, che è un magistrale profilo della storia del Grand Tour. In queste pagine Praz osserva che «pochi viaggiatori sanno essere personali, sanno vedere con occhi che penetrano nell’essenza delle cose» – e accenna a certi scrittori che hanno lasciato, nei loro diari, puri elenchi di monumenti e chiese visitate. Praz è ovviamente l’opposto: come nella sua attività di critico era attratto sempre e soltanto dalla peculiarità – e dal risuonare delle peculiarità l’una sull’altra – così nella sua veste di viaggiatore lascia vibrare la sua attenzione, di preferenza, non già dinanzi agli spettacoli obbligatori, ma dinanzi a scene laterali, ad angoli dimenticati, a piccole «enclaves» nello spazio, verso le quali il suo passo rabdomantico è ogni volta attirato. Il suo amato Charles Lamb, «quando si recava a far visita a una qualche famosa “country-house” d’Inghilterra, per prima cosa chiedeva del salottino cinese». Allo stesso modo, dopo una doverosa gita alle Piramidi, Praz prende subito l’occasione per una lunga visita alla deplorevole villa di Faruk. Quanto al neoclassico, lo insegue fino in Tasmania. E mai il greve orrore delle celebrazioni guerriere gli apparirà così incombente come nel War Memorial di Canberra. Ci sono luoghi e cose che sembravano attendere da tempo il suo sguardo: in un seminterrato alla periferia di Washington, una vera città fatta di case di bambole; le «carrozzelle decrepite» di una «Baden-Baden tropicale», la Petropolis di Pedro II; i palazzi di Nancy, dai «balconcini rococò... su cui i viticci e le conchiglie dorate serpeggiano come rampicanti delle Esperidi o d’un altro paese di favoleggiata beatitudine...»; le rovine di Palmira, dove «il tempo ha smussato gli ornamenti, steso un velo di poesia su quel che poteva esserci di crudo, di provinciale in questo impero d’una stagione». Mentre la vita immediata, invadente poco lo tocca, il suo vagare è una ricerca delle «anime morte delle innumerevoli cose». Per lui, «il massimo piacere del viaggiare si raggiunge quando allo spostamento nello spazio si unisce lo spostamento nel tempo». Allora è la sua acuminata percezione del senso del tempo a guidarlo verso l’esistenza-sospesa, quasi ritagliata dal resto, dei «suoi» luoghi, come la minuscola St. Luke’s Church di New York: «Simili angoli sono come i sogni della città, remoti archetipi che passano sull’anima di una città come nubi, e la città pare per un momento dimenticarsi, rimanere sospesa sull’orlo d’un’esistenza prenatale, ma poi la risveglia lo scampanio dei carri dei pompieri».
