Il 17 giugno 1881 Lidia Poët, davanti a un’immensa folla plaudente, si laurea in Legge all’Università di Torino. Ha ventisei anni, intelligenza e coraggio da vendere, ed è determinata ad arrivare dove nessun’altra era ancora mai riuscita: diventare avvocata. Due anni dopo termina la pratica, sostiene brillantemente gli esami per l’iscrizione all’Albo, qualcuno nel Consiglio dell’Ordine storce il naso, ma la maggioranza la sostiene. Ce l’ha fatta, è lei la prima avvocata d’Italia. Ma la conquista sarà effimera: il Procuratore del Re impugna l’iscrizione davanti alla Corte d’appello di Torino, che dichiara che le donne non possono esercitare l’avvocatura. Lidia si prepara al ricorso in Cassazione, mentre l’intero Regno attende col fiato sospeso la sentenza definitiva. Tutti i giornali, i giuristi, le femministe, i politici durante quei mesi non parlano d’altro: chi è a favore, chi è contro, chi precorre i tempi e chi rimane ancorato al passato. Ne emerge una polifonia di voci, l’affresco di un’epoca fervida e contraddittoria e, soprattutto, il ritratto di una donna straordinaria, che con la sua tenacia e il suo ingegno ha dischiuso la strada a tutte le colleghe del futuro.

Using a comparative perspective, this volume studies the court as a crucial center of government and politics, as well as the dominant focus for the ruling elites. The essays explore how the early modern court gradually developed from the medieval royal household to its very different form in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
