This book results from the Symposium: Metropolitan Landscapes that MSLab of the Politecnico di Milano and ETSA (Sevilla) organized at the IALE 2019 Conference (Milan, July 2019) to manage radical territory transformation with a strategic vision. The widespread growth of urban areas indicates the importance of building resilient sustainable cities capable of minimizing climate-change impact production. The Symposium aimed to discuss the Urban Metabolism approach considering the combination of Landscapes set in a single Metropolitan Ecosystem. Accordingly, new design strategies of transformation, replacement or maintenance can compose Urban-Rural Linkage patterns and a decalage of different landscape contexts. Ecological interest in environmental sustainability, compatibility, and resilience is not tied exclusively to the balance between production and energy consumption. Thus, it is the integration over time and at several scales of the urban and rural landscapes and their inhabitants that nourish the Metropolitan Bioregion. Moreover, the Metropolitan Landscape Book's research hypothesis is the need for a Glossary, strengthening the basis of understanding Metropolitan Landscape's complexity. The clear and complete relationship that historically linked city and countryside has gradually faded more and more, up to the configuration of the current situation of urban sprawl by several parties considered unsustainable at the environmental, functional and morphological level. While an approach aimed at recovering lost physical and territorial realities may not appear very effective, it is however possible to attempt to identify paths to restore structure in the contemporary settlement layouts. A structure able to newly weave ecological, functional, morphological and symbolic relations between the urban and rural dimension. In this frame of reference, a decisive role can be played by open spaces, non-built-up natural or farming environments which constitute a resource for regaining the environmental quality of the contemporary city; for the construction of a new large system of public and collective spaces; and for the redefinition of limits, boundaries and thresholds between city and countryside. These are the topics dealt with in the book through a theoretical focus on the "middle landscape", its roots and the more recent planning experiences, and through a planning exercise on the Pistoia landscape. The aim of the volume is to attempt to provide indications and tools in order to read and design landscape with urban boundaries, today a strategic sphere for the regeneration of the contemporary city.

Rodrigo Perez de Arce's essay Urban Transformations and Architectural Additions was published during the formative stages of Post Modernism, at the point where theory was becoming seriously established. Jencks' first essays formalising the term Post Modernism in architecture and the revised Learning from Las Vegas were published the previous year. In planning terms, modernism had become associated with comprehensive redevelopment and forms of urban organisation that ignored context, history and any sense of tradition. De Arce considered the essential nature of buildings and the richness of historic urban form and explored how robust that essence was over time. He looked at the value of essential remnants and rich complexities in maintaining a sense of continuity and relevance. Having explored the adaptation process in history, de Arce went on to see how such a process might be simulated in contemporary cities with modern buildings, using additions and layers to change them from objects in infinite windswept space to being part of a rich urban fabric which described urban place. To do this he used concrete examples; housing schemes by James Stirling, new government centres in Chandigrah and Dacca and more prosaic 60's housing blocks. The paper had a fundamental influence on the way that architects and planners thought about the nature of cities: as dynamic organisms that were tangible to human beings, completely opposite to the systems thinking of the time. It contributed to ideas about the importance of street, place and city block which influenced so much recent regeneration practice. As we enter a phase of development where the reuse and adaptation of existing buildings is becoming paramount from both an economic and sustainable point of view, Perez de Arce's paper gives important insights into how to think about the process positively.

Nell’attuale società, il tema del paesaggio suscita “esigenze” e stimola “attese” di tipo diverso a causa delle tante componenti sociali, scientifiche e culturali che lo coinvolgono, in particolare per la profonda “crisi dei luoghi”, quel malessere che si manifesta nelle periferie prive di identità, nelle campagne e lungo le coste spesso sfigurate, nel mutato rapporto tra l’ambiente naturale e le comunità che lo abitano. Per “esigenze” della società contemporanea intendiamo le diffuse aspirazioni nei confronti di un generale miglioramento della qualità della vita, di un cambiamento di rotta nelle politiche di trasformazione territoriale, di una revisione del concetto di tutela e di conservazione da intendere in senso attivo e innovativo con il ripristino della stabilità degli ecosistemi, con un’attenta considerazione dell’identità dei luoghi, un rinnovato e più corretto rapporto con l’ambiente naturale e i valori culturali e sociali del territorio. Le “attese” possono riguardare la maggiore e migliore disponibilità di aree verdi ricreative nelle conurbazioni metropolitane; la bonifica e la riqualificazione dei paesaggi degradati e un corretto riuso delle aree industriali dismesse; il recupero dell’identità culturale e delle connotazioni naturali dei siti storici; un idoneo inserimento di nuove opere nel territorio e un’accurata valorizzazione delle risorse paesistiche da trasmettere alle generazioni future. La “Convenzione Europea del Paesaggio” recupera una centralità strategica, nei confronti del paesaggio, nelle politiche territoriali e nella considerazione della nostra società, richiamando l’attenzione degli Stati Membri ad una unitarietà di regole e di governo che guidi l’azione umana nel territorio, secondo comportamenti coerenti e azioni sostenibili; sottolinea l’importanza di un’attenzione al paesaggio ed ai suoi valori non solo nei parchi, nelle aree protette o in zone di particolare bellezza, ma in ogni territorio, in tutti gli strumenti urbanistici e nell’attività progettuale in genere.
