The growth of princely states in early Renaissance Italy brought a thorough renewal to the old seats of power. One of the most conspicuous outcomes of this process was the building or rebuilding of new court palaces, erected as prestigious residences in accord with the new ‘classical’ principles of Renaissance architecture. The novelties, however, went far beyond architectural forms: they involved the reorganisation of courtly interiors and their functions, new uses for the buildings, and the relationship between the palaces and their surroundings. The whole urban setting was affected by these processes, and therefore the social, residential and political customs of its inhabitants. This is the focus of A Renaissance Architecture of Power, which aims to analyse from a comparative perspective the evolution of Italian court palaces in the Renaissance in their entirety. The early modern period saw the proliferation of religious, public and charitable institutions and the emergence of new educational structures. By bringing together two areas of inquiry that have so far been seen as distinct, the study of institutions and that of the house and domesticity, this collection provides new insights into the domestic experience of men, women and children who lived in non-family arrangements, while also expanding and problematizing the notion of 'domestic interior'. Through specific case studies, contributors reassess the validity of the categories 'domestic' and 'institutional' and of the oppositions private public, communal individual, religious profane applied to institutional spaces and objects. They consider how rituals, interior decorations, furnishings and images were transferred from the domestic to the institutional interior and vice versa, but also the creative ways in which the residents participated in the formation of their living settings. A variety of secular and religious institutions are considered: hospitals, asylums and orphanages, convents, colleges, public palaces of the ducal and papal court. The interest and novelty of this collection resides in both its subject matter and its interdisciplinary and Europe-wide dimension. The theme is addressed from the perspective of art history, architectural history, and social, gender and cultural history. Chapters deal with Italy, Britain, the Netherlands, Flanders and Portugal and with both Protestant and Catholic settings. The wide range of evidence employed by contributors includes sources - such as graffiti, lottery tickets or garland pictures - that have rarely if ever been considered by historians.

Ghisetti Giavarina), a Pisa nel primo periodo mediceo (coordinatore prof.ssa E. Karwacka) e alle Marche (coordinatore prof. F. Quinterio), oltre alla Campania (coordinatori proff. A, Gambardella e D. Jacazzi) cui sono dedicati i due volumi Campania. Saggi e Campania. Ricerche. Il tomo Campania. Ricerche restituisce un ampio repertorio di una produzione architettonica in gran parte sconosciuta, frutto di indagini sul campo nelle province campane, mentre il volume Campania. Saggi collaziona contributi su temi critici di approfondimento sul rapporto tra la cultura campana, la corte aragonese e il lessico architettonico del classicismo rinascimentale. Lo studio delle vicende dell'architettura del Rinascimento, includendo in tale periodo il Quattrocento, a partire dal centro propulsore toscano fiorentino fino alle realtà locali, e il Cinquecento, nelle sue evoluzioni manieristiche, è incentrato sulle aree regionali descritte e, in particolare, sulla definizione in Campania del rapporto, dell'apporto e dell'attività dei maestri fiorentini e degli artefici provenienti dalle aree toscane. Tale indagine è strumento indispensabile per individuare nel Rinascimento delle corti italiane non una contrapposizione alternativa al lessico toscano oppure una semplicistica filiazione, ma una analogia di sperimentazioni, una continuità di temi e una rielaborazione delle tradizioni autoctone. Ad introduzione del volume i saggi di A. Gambardella, di D. Jacazzi e di S. Borsi indagano le ragioni di una ricerca sul rapporto tra la cultura albertiana e la corte aragonese, individuando tematiche e modelli della sperimentazione e diffusione del linguaggio classicista. Segue il contributo di R. Dalla Negra sul riutilizzo dell'architettura rinascimentale in Campania, incentrato sull'analisi di alcuni episodi emblematici. La successiva sezione raccoglie le ricerche su Napoli e le città di Caserta, Salerno, Benevento e Avellino, rispettivamente a cura di V. Tempone, R. Serraglio, A. Gambardella, M.G. Pezone e F. Ricostruire gli avvenimenti storici e artistici che hanno contribuito alla realizzazione del Palazzo della Sapienza è compito non certo facile: le complesse vicende che hanno determinato l'attuale struttura del palazzo non sono state ancora del tutto chiarite dagli studiosi che si sono interessati alla sua costruzione. D'altronde non si può dimenticare che questo edificio, che ci appare cosí unitario quasi fosse l'opera di una sola mente ordinatrice, sia stato realizzato nel volgere di tre secoli: dalla fondazione nel 1303 ad opera di Bonifacio VIII, attraverso le trasformazioni del 1400, fino alla sua strutturazione finale, frutto dell'architettura del '500 che culmina con l'intervento di Francesco Borromini che qui realizza una delle sue opere più interessanti e mature. Il volume cerca di chiarire, alla luce dei recenti studi, le complesse vicende costruttive dell'edificio, dalla sua fondazione fino al suo completamento ad opera di Borromini. Una parte del lavoro è dedicata al repertorio degli artigiani attivi nel cantiere della Sapienza. Prima di giungere al suo assetto definitivo i lavori sono stati più volte interrotti e ripresi sotto differenti architetti e ad ogni riapertura del cantiere corrisponde generalmente un nuovo reclutamento di manodopera. Lo studio contiene inoltre una cronologia documentaria che, pur non potendo essere esaustiva, vuole essere un contributo alla comprensione delle complesse vicende che hanno accompagnato la realizzazione della Sapienza attraverso le cronache e gli avvenimenti legati all'edificio, le ragioni economiche che hanno condizionato l'opera e, soprattutto il succedersi degli architetti e degli artigiani che hanno collaborato alla sua costruzione.
