At the end of the nineteenth century, German theologians and philosophers rediscovered the Renaissance cardinal Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464). Immediately they hailed Cusanus as the first modern thinker, a brilliant German rival to the French Descartes. But since the founding of the Cusanus critical edition in 1927 up to its conclusion in 2005, historians have gradually learned that Nicholas was more of a medieval preacher and contemplative than a modern philosopher. Yet over the same century, modern German and French readers were already digging into Nicholas's many works. There they encountered an exciting voice with fresh perspectives about God's immanence in the cosmos and the awesome capacities of the human mind. Leading philosophers and theologians from Erich Przywara to Karl Jaspers to Hans-Georg Gadamer, and from Gilles Deleuze to Jacques Lacan to Michel de Certeau, found their own thinking stimulated by the cardinal's innovative concepts and interdisciplinary style. Even as Nicholas shifted from modern to medieval among historians, he was emerging as a contemporary interlocutor for moderns and postmoderns. Who could have guessed that the first debate between Jean-Luc Marion and Emmanuel Falque would take place over the fifteenth-century mystical dialogue, De visione dei? If Meister Eckhart found his moment amidst Deconstruction in prior decades, Nicholas of Cusa is our thinker for today. His interests anticipate themes in continental philosophy of religion, whether alterity, invisibility, the fold, or the icon. His habit of interweaving philosophy and theology anticipates current debates on the thresholds of phenomenology. Our volume first maps the contours of modern receptions of Nicholas of Cusa in French and German spheres, and then beyond Europe to the Americas and Japan. Un corpo a corpo degno dell’autore con cui viene ingaggiato; un corpo a corpo con il pensiero di Emanuele Severino sicuramente all’altezza del rigore speculativo di quella che è senz’altro, anche per Marco, una delle massime espressioni del pensiero contemporaneo. Marco Rienzi, comunque, interroga Severino, ma attraverso questo esercizio ermeneutico-teoretico, fa anche i conti con alcune delle grandi questioni che ossessionano la filosofia sin dalle sue prime testimonianze, e in particolare con uno degli autori con cui lo stesso pensiero di Severino è in costante dialogo: Hegel. Ma quel che più conta è che il giovane studioso, dottorando dell’Università San Raffaele, riesce in queste pagine a far toccare con mano, al lettore, cosa significhi ‘filosofare’, senza perdersi in superflue valutazioni di questo o quel contenuto del pensiero severiniano, ma ripercorrendone con piglio da studioso di grande raffinatezza gli snodi essenziali, con una consapevolezza ‘critica’ che gli consente di non farsi mai fagocitare (come sarebbe peraltro potuto facilmente accadere) dalla fascinazione connessa ad ogni grande testimonianza filosofica.

Dalla Premessa di Mario Capanna. Omaggio degli allievi a Emanuele Severino: l’idea mi frullava in testa da tempo, ma rimaneva lontana dal concretizzarsi. Poi, come quando un filo galleggia a lungo nel tempo e, per impreviste circostanze, viene ad annodarsi, ecco l’occasione. Convegno filosofico a Città di Castello, primavera 2017. Vi partecipano, fra gli altri, Massimo Donà e Luigi Vero Tarca, grandi pensatori. Ci mettiamo in un angolo ed espongo l’idea. La risposta, prima che dalle parole, viene dalla vividezza dei loro occhi. Decidiamo di metterci al lavoro senza indugio. Arriviamo così all’evento, che si è svolto domenica pomeriggio, 17 dicembre 2017, al Teatro Franco Parenti a Milano. E, a verificarsi, è un fatto inedito: per la prima volta uno straordinario filosofo riceve, da vivo, l’omaggio e la gratitudine dei suoi discepoli. A suggello del convegno doniamo al Maestro una targa con incisi i nomi degli allievi. Veramente dies signanda lapillo, per la commozione di tutti, la profondità dei ragionamenti, l’intensità della gratitudine, l’autenticità e la bellezza dell’incontro.

Emanuele Severino è stato uno dei più importanti filosofi italiani contemporanei. Ciò che fa scandalo, nel suo pensiero, è sicuramente la negazione del divenire nichilisticamente inteso, e la conseguente condanna di ogni paradigma in cui è stato pensato il rapporto tra tempo e storia, dall’eterno presente della grecità al tempo escatologico del pensiero giudaico e cristiano. È possibile, tuttavia, sostenere che nella riflessione severiniana sulle Cose Ultime permanga un residuo escatologico, in continuità con la tradizione da cui il filosofo vorrebbe invece distanziarsi? L’autore, dopo aver analizzato la particolare configurazione che assumono lo iam e il nondum relativamente al concretarsi del destino, traccia i lineamenti di quella che definisce “l’infinita escatologia del destino”. Di qui l’interrogazione si sposta sulla necessità, per il linguaggio severiniano, di riformularsi in maniera inesausta, per indicare ciò che oltrepassa il linguaggio stesso, prendendo a prestito immagini, rimandi teologici e mitemi apocalittici.

“Nessuno che abbia letto le Storie può ignorarlo”; così Spinoza si rivolge al lettore nel Trattato Politico indicando le Storie, probabilmente quelle di Tacito, quali depositarie di un’esperienza condivisa, a tutti utile. Mentre a Boxel raccomanda di non credere alle storie e di non prestar fede alle “autorità” filosofiche, negli scolii dell’Etica e nei trattati politici in particolare, Spinoza cita e fa riferimento agli storici latini, le cui storie e parole sono assunte con serietà. L’esperienza “per sentito dire” (ex auditu) o “da segni” (ex signis) è quindi centrale nella filosofia politica spinoziana e svolge funzioni, di volta in volta diverse, a seconda del contesto: crea un terreno comune di discussione con il proprio pubblico ideale o ne smentisce i presupposti interpretativi, conferma la teoria o manifesta i nessi eterni e necessari tra passioni e politica. Attraverso lo studio delle varie forme di riferimento agli storici, scopriremo allora uno Spinoza che si adatta, almeno entro una certa misura, alle capacità di comprensione degli interlocutori che, se non sono convinti dalle ragioni a priori dell’Etica, potrebbero essere almeno persuasi dai suoi racconti.

This book brings postcolonial critique directly to bear on established ways of theorizing international relations. Its primary concern is with the non-European world and its relations with the North. In advancing an alternative conception of "relations international", the book draws on alternative source material and different forms of writing. It also features short stories, an interview and explores the role of poetics and performance. The suzerainty of the disciplinary writ is challenged on three primary grounds. Firstly on its Eurocentrism, which leads the discipline to pass lightly over the distinctive life experiences of most of the world’s people. Secondly, on the discipline’s failure to engage in any systematic way with other bodies of knowledge about the international, as for example international political economy, postcolonialism and development. Lastly, it confronts the ‘top down’ nature of the politics of the discipline, and that seldom addresses everyday life. From squatter towns to the evasions of the poor, from law through to literature, this work raises a number of problems for International relations. It challenges a colonial mindset, de-centres the west and opens the field to new approaches that are far more inter-disciplinary than international relations generally allows. It is a provocative contribution for students and scholars of IR and Postcolonial studies alike.
